his book Invisible Monsters: “Our real
discoveries come from chaos—from
going to the place that looks wrong and
stupid and foolish.”
It’s a lesson learned all too well
by Westworld’s leading man, James
Marsden, who appears on Men’s Health’s
cover for the second time. The 44-year-
old star of X-Men, Enchanted, and other
terriic ilms lived a charmed existence
for much of his life—until his marriage
of 11 years came to an abrupt end. As he
revealed to us in an honest, emotional
interview, divorce was the irst time in
his life he felt he lost his equilibrium.
“It was scary and sad,” he said, ight-
ing back tears, “and it made me pull
everything into focus. I needed to focus
on what’s important. I needed to heal.
So that’s who I am now because of that. I
know things you regret can be catalysts
for good things.”
Today Marsden is happy, his career is
motoring at full throttle, he’s healthier
than ever (see page 98 for proof), and
he’s in a great relationship. Marsden’s
hard-won words about embracing

inspiration. I hope you give them a read.

Is a month’s worth of

By Clint Carter
Q
Whenever I close my eyes,
I can still see those big red balls
swinging above me. Screw those
orbs. They’ve bucked many into the cold
waters below, but I thought I would be
diferent.
But let’s back up. A month before these
visions, I met Drew Drechsel, an elite
ninja trainer, to prep for a qualifying
run on American Ninja Warrior, which
launches its 10th season on May 30 on
NBC (8 p.m. ET/PT). The show reaches
7 million viewers a week. It has two hosts,
a sideline commentator, and 27 cameras.
The season begins with six-obstacle
qualifying runs in six cities nationally,
and ninja wannabes relentlessly train
for these events in specialized gyms and
obstacle-laden backyards. So yes, it’s a
pretty big deal.
Drechsel, an eight-time qualiier,
agreed to guide me through a gauntlet
of tests to assess my muscle and balance.
So here I am, outside his 5,500-square-
foot gym, New Era Ninjas, in Hamden,
Connecticut, ready to work. He throws the

THE FASTEST WAY TO CHILL
Pour cold water into your beer-
and-ice-loaded cooler—enough to
make a small liquid layer above the ice,
says Rhett Allain, Ph.D., an associate
professor of physics at Southeastern
Louisiana University. The water creates
better thermal contact, reducing
chill time. Stir in a big handful
of kosher salt, which helps
drop the freezing point.

Avoid these 7 causes of job
burnout and enjoy success on

Steve Blank’s oh-shit
moment came during a
Friday afternoon sales
meeting. He had been dividing
his time between two Silicon
Valley tech jobs, one for a com-
pany outside Palo Alto serving
the defense and intelligence
communities, and the other for a
microprocessor producer called
Zilog. He was good at his work—
necessary, even. He put in six or
seven 16-hour days a week and
accepted the crazy schedule.
At the Friday meeting, “about
three-quarters of the way
through my workweek,” as
Blank puts it, a colleague
reminded him about upcom-
ing classes he needed to teach.
“The devil is in the details,”
the colleague advised. Blank
nodded and went for the obvious
defense contractor joke: “I’ve

These weren’t failures—they were experiences.
Traveling with a partner can lead to some great memories,
many with an R rating—or at least a rom-com glow. This isn’t
misty-eyed conjecture. A U.S. Travel Association survey con-
irms that vacations can strengthen relationships, help couples
communicate, and reduce the odds of divorce. Escaping from
work, laundry, and kids is liberating. Add in mountain views or
salt air, and new sensations help “bring you into your body,” says
relationship coach Celeste Hirschman. It all aids sexual arousal.
Your brain loves to travel. “Variety, surprise, and adventure
open up the dopamine response in the brain,” says sex coach Patti
Britton. That low of feel-good hormones brings a sense of excite-
ment. “Most couples lose that over time,” she says.
These trips stand out for me and Nate. No need to copy them
exactly; use them as inspiration. With a little planning and imag-
ination, you won’t need a lot of money—or, in some cases, clothes.

LAST AUGUST 21 AT 4:30am,
I ROUSED MY 7-YEAR-OLD SON,
Simon, from his bed in a creaky hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In a few
hours, a rare solar eclipse would occur. Dawn revealed a brilliant blue sky,
promising a clear view of totality. Simon was thrilled; I felt indiferent.
Neither of us had ever witnessed an eclipse. But my expectations were
tempered. I’d been to Machu Picchu, Victoria Falls, the Himalayas.
An eclipse is a mere two minutes of solar showmanship. Big whoop.

to finish strong. In designing this month’s four-week pro-

shoots. Go hard. In this workout, be sure to choose a weight that will
challenge you. Each week will bring tougher workouts, but you’ll love
the big payoff: A stronger, more ripped body this summer.
