SUPERLATIVES: COMPARE ONE THING TO A GROUP / WHEN WE COMPARE MORE THAN TWO
THINGS

Bogotá is the biggest city in Colombia

I’m the tallest in my family

This is the most expensive book I’ve ever bought

SPELLING RULES:

1. Add -er to most one-syllable adjectives (short adjectives)

the coldest / the smallest / the fastest / the tallest

2. Adjectives ending in consonant + vowel + consonant: double the final consonant + -est

The biggest / the hottest / the slimmest

3. Adjectives ending in -y change to -ier

The happiest / the sunniest

 If the adjective is long and ends in +y you have to change the +y for -i

Friendly = friendlier / healthy = healthier

4. Adjectives with two or more than two syllables: add the most + adjective

The most expensive / the most interesting / the most important

5. IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES

Good: the best

Bad: the worst

Far: the farthest / the furthest


Before superlatives, we can write the article “the” or a possessive adjective ( my, your, his,
her, its, our, their)

The most expensive car / the hottest city in Colombia

My best experience at school / Your best friend when you were a child

PREPOSITIONS

IN : groups of people and places= She is the most intelligent student IN her class (person)

Russia is the biggest country IN the world (place)

OF: in most other places = This was the best food OF our vacation / That place was the best
place OF that holiday
