Work Instruction Title Gas Test for Hot Work / Use of Area Monitoring and
Wireless Gas Detections systems for Hot Work
Work Area Group All Maersk / SMA personnel in Zohr Site acting as AGT
1.Purpose:
 To implement a close control in Gas Testing recommendations as noted in Permit to Work
document
2.Hazards:
 Toxic / flammable gases
 Various Contaminants
 Falling from height / Slip, Trip, Fall Hazards
 SIMOPS operations in Area – Breaking containments, liftings, etc …
3.Controls:
 Use proper PPE
 Check with Maersk Coordinator about the presence of recorded leaks in Area, check piping
colour code
 Check MSDS
 Check the Area before starting the Gas Test.
4.Performing the Gas Test
 Atmospheric test
- Multi Gas monitor must be tested and zeroed in a gas-free area
- Asses all possible area where combustible gases can be stored / trapped – See Annex 2
 Gas Testing Procedure
- Test the point of the Hot Work and 1,5 meters / 3-4 feet around, and any other suspected
area.
- Test all the gas piping flanges, valves, bleeds , gauges within 10 meters / 35 feet radius of
the Hot Work.
- Atmospheric test can be retaken if there is a break in Hot Work job which exceed 1 hour, at
any time during the duration of the job and shall be retaken upon any request
- If any reading recorded outside normal range, perform a fresh air in safe area and repeat
the gas test; if possible, cross check with the second gas detectors.

5.Recording the Gas Test

Gas Testing for Hot Work / Use of Area Monitoring and Wireless Gas Detection
systems
 After Performing the Gas Testing for Hot Work, record result in the Section 14. Gas Test
Result
 Clearly note the Date / Time section - format DD/MM and HH/MM

 Note in Section 5. Safety Requirements / Additional Risk mitigation measures: ‘’Work to

be started within an hour from the last gas test’’.

 Inform PA about this note, and about the requirement to request a new gas test if leaves
the job location for more than one hour.
6.Testing Frequency and deploying Area Gas Monitoring / Wireless Monitoring systems
A. Deploying Area Monitoring System Draeger X-Zone
Check Section 4. Controls
 If ‘’Continuous LEL / UEL test ‘’ticked – contact Maersk coordinator and request one
Draeger X-Zone to be installed for the duration of the Hot Work.

 Draeger X-Zone unit will be placed between the Hot Work Point and the closest possible
source of flammable gas.
 If more Hot Work areas are covered by the same permit on a large area, , consider using
two Draeger X-Zones, as per the previous point.
 If not possible to place a Draeger X-Zone, consider to provide one X-Am 2500 Multi Gas for
each Hot Work in the permit.
 If Draeger X-Zone is present at the location of the Hot Work, it is not required to repeat the
gas test if the team is leaving the work site for more than one hour.
 If a X-Am 2500 Multi Gas is provided, repeat the Gas Test if the working team leaves the
location of Hot Work for more than one hour.
 However, the Draeger X-Zone and X-Am 2500 Multi Gas detectors will be checked at every
4 hours, during the Site Safety Tour.
In the case that the number of Draeger X-Zone is not enough to cover all the Hot Work jobs, one
Maersk AGT will be present at the Hot Work location, providing continuous monitoring with the X-
Am 2500 Multi gas detector.

B. Deploying Wireless Gas Detection Systems

Check Section 4. Controls

Gas Testing for Hot Work / Use of Area Monitoring and Wireless Gas Detection
systems

 If ‘’Temporary F&G detectors ‘’ticked – check the Permit to Work document for the
presence of a Safety System Isolation Certificate related to Gas Detection system.
 Inspect the Area and locate overridden Plant fixed sensors.
 Design and install a Temporary Wireless Detection system, replacing overridden Plant
fixed sensors.
 Check every 7 days the status of MOS in Area.
C. Recording frequency of Gas Test
Check Section 14. Gas Test Result ‘’Repeat gas testing frequency ( when required ) by an AGT
every’’
 If Draeger X-Zone / Wireless gas detection system are installed or Maersk AGT is in
attendance for the duration of the Hot Work, note ‘’Continuous’’.
 If non of above conditions is present, the frequency noted shall be ‘’every 6 hours’’.
 Refer to PTB HSE / PROD DEPT for more details regarding the Hot Work to be be
performed.
 Asses the possibility to implement Continuous LEL / UEL Test in the above mentioned
conditions.
