The Sandbox

The story begins at the brightest day, with the Young Man performing his calisthenics
near a sandbox in the beach. Mommy and Daddy brought Grandma from the city and they
decided to place her in a sandbox. Mommy and Daddy sat on the chairs waiting while the
Musician plays on and off according to what the other characters instruct him/her to do. As
Mommy and Daddy cease to acknowledge Grandma while waiting, Grandma reverts form
her whining and talks coherently to the audience. Grandma and the Young Man starts
talking to each other, where Grandma feels comfortable as she wasn’t treated harshly by the
Young Man, unlike Mommy and Daddy. While still talking to the Young Man, Grandma tells
someone off-stage that it should be nighttime already. Once the brightest day has become the
darkest night, Mommy and Daddy heard an on-stage rumbling of thunder. Mommy weeps
heavily as she knew that Grandma’s death was near. As the day resumes, Mommy talks
about moving on and facing the future while standing by the sandbox before exiting with
Daddy. Buried half in the sandbox, Grandma continues mocking Mommy and Daddy and
then realizes she can no longer move. It is at this moment that the Young Man stops his
calisthenics, went by the sandbox, and introduces himself as the Angel of Death to Grandma.
Grandma compliments him and closes her eyes with a smile.
