Rizal-Blumentritt Letter Summaries

Rizal: 13 April, 1887 (Berlin)

Rizal wrote the Blumentritt to relay his frustrations on the difficulties of having to learn about
Philippines from foreign books. He cited his thoughts of the political status of the country and how he
works to educate and share opinions about our country through writing along with fellow Filipinos. He
also expressed his disappointment about Mr. Barrantes and his greedy action of imprisoning 14-16
innocent, wealthy individuals from Tondo. He ended the letter by stating that the country will be
indebted to Blumentritt if he writes a complete history of the country. Rizal believes that Blumentritt
can do it because he is an impartial judge, given Austria have not colonized and country and does not
aim to conquer the Philippines. He also noted that he is not fanatical Catholic. Therefore, the truth will
not be distorted as he can write as a foreign observer.

Rizal: 20 May, 1887 (Vienna)

The letter is short, where Rizal advised Bumentritt that they have arrived in Vienna. He wrote to advise
him that he will visit the gentlemen Blumentritt recommended the next day. He noted that he is tired
and they are to stay for 4-5 days in the city.
