PRELIMINARY

1.1 BACKGROUND

In the wood industry today, many companies use a manual cutting system or use human labor
to cut log. So we need a technology that can help humans in cutting log. This technology is a
machine that can cut log automatically.
This automatic wood block cutting machine uses PLC which is able to control the movement
of the machine in cutting log so that it can be efficiently and accurately and can reduce labor costs
in cutting log.

1.4 BASIC OF THEORY

A. PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
PLC is a control device which also requires a control system Support as other
control devices, and to activate this devices it takes a voltage source from outside which is
set on the control system which aims to regulate and protect the system. The definition of
Programmable Logic Controller according to Capiel (1982) is: Digitally operated
electronic system for industrial use, where this system uses programmable memory for the
internal storage of Instructions that implement that particular function. As a logical
operation, sequencr, representation, computation and arithmetic to control machines or
process. Via a digital or analog I / 0 module..
Definition PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)
PLC is a type of compact computer that is used as a control automation equipment
that available in the industry. Inside the PLC there is a microprocessor which is the brain
of this tool and for data memory using EEPROM. As a programming language, face-to-
face logic language diagrams are used (interface) using a ladder diagram. This tool is
designed to withstand relatively high temperature, dusty and dirty area, resistant to heavy
noise comes from the surrounding engine, resistant to shocks and unstable conditions. In
the PLC there is an input-output terminal that can be adjusted as needed. Then these
terminals will connected to the appropriate sensors and actuators with its function. There
are two types of input-output available on PLCs, namely relays (digital) and transistors
(analog). Relay type is a connection that works in form digital (1 and 0). In other words,
the functions that work from that connection are only ON and OFF. In the connection
type the transistor works with analog functions. This type is divided into 2 types, namely
PNP (sourcing) and NPN (sinking). Connections on analog type PLC are need more
attention to the input-output component to be connected to the PLC must be an apropriate
type of analog PLC that being used, otherwise it is most likely will burn.

Parts of PLC :
1. CPU: control and supervise the operation in the PLC, carry out programs
2. Memory: stores programs and provides storage locations and results calculation
3. Input / Output: Each I / O has an address and sequence number to use during create a
program
4. 4. Power Supply

B. PROFINET (Process Field Net)
Profinet is the industry technical standard for data communication via Ethernet
Industry. The use of profinet itself has been regulated in IEC 61158 and IEC 61784. The
concept of the profinet itself is defined in close collaboration with the end use based on the
Ethernet standard which is IEEE 802 compliant. The image below is profinet I / O device
where there are: I / O Superrior, I / O Controller, I / O Device.

C. MOTOR AC
Ac motors are lithium motors driven by alternating current or AC (AIR
CONDITIONING). In general, an AC motor consists of two main components, namely
stator and rotor. As previously explained on the DC motor, the stator is the stationary and
part located outside. The stator has a coil that is electrified back and forth and will

produces a rotating magnetic field. The second part is the rotor. Rotor is the rotating part
and is located inside (inside the stator). the rotor can move because of the torque acting
on the shaft where the torque is generated by the magnetic field spinning.

D. PROXIMITY SENSOR
Proximity Sensoris a electronic sensor detect the presence of objects in the vicinity without
physical touch. It can also be said that the Proximity Sensor is a tool that can change
information about movementor the object's existence becomes an electrical signal. There
are 3 types of proximity sensors, namely sensors capacitive, inductive sensor, and
photoelectric proximity sensor. This optical distance sensor detects the existence of an
object with its refractive or reflected light, namely infrared. When there is an object close
to the sensor, the light on the sensor will bounce back on receptors so that the receiver will
pick up on the signal as a sign that the object is there bypassing the sensor. In the early
days of this sponsorship detects the arrival of the box, when the box is detected it will stop
the conveyor slowly.

The specifications of the Proximity Sensor Photoelectric SICK WL9-2P431 are as
follows:
1. Input voltage 10 - 30 VDC.
2. Range 2 - 4 m.
How to use the SICK WL9 2P431 Photoelectric Sensor requires:
1. 24 VDC power supply.
2. Alligator claw connector.
3. SICK WL9 2P431.
E. CONVEYOR
Transfer conveyors are a development of the use of conveyors with 2 working
directions on the package load ground. The direction of movement of the ground based on
the load package. The foundation load package is driven by a dc gearbox motor using scrap
carpets. Wheels are used as a base support on conveyor rails. Belt conveyor can used to
grip material in either "unit load" or "bulk material" horizontally or obliquely. What is
meant by "unit load" is an object usually can be counted in number one by one, for example
boxes, bags, blocks etc. Meanwhile, Bulk Material is material in the form of grains, powder
or powder, for example sand, cement etc. The working principle of the belt conveyor is to
transport the material on the belt where the feed after reaching the head material is spilled
due to the belt reversing direction. Belt driven by a drive / head pulley using a motor.
Head pulley pulling the belt with the principle of friction between the surface of the drum
and the belt, so that capacity depends on the friction force.

F. PNEUMATIC
A pneumatic actuator is an actuator that uses compressed air to become a
mechanical movement. By giving pressurized air to one side of the piston surface (forward
direction), while the other side (backward direction) opens into the atmosphere, the force
is applied to the surface of the piston so that the piston rod is pushed out until it reaches its
maximum position and stops.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

2.1 DEFINITION THE PROCESS OF CUTTING LOG WOOD

The process of cutting wood blocks automatically serves to make it easier for workers
and the wood industry everywhere. So that in cutting log will be tidier and faster. This log
cutting machine uses a sensor and a controller device to adjust so that this log cutting
machine can cut logs in accordance with the wishes of the industry neatly in cutting logs that
we make, using an ac motor, conveyor, sensors in the form of proximity sensors and light
sensors, pneumatic actuators, controller devices plc that uses a timer.
2.2 DESIGN CUTTING LOG WOOD
A. Design
2.3 PROCEDURE CUTTING LOG WOOD

Motor 1 will move when Sensor 1 detects a wooden block above the conveyor. Motor
1 is used to move the conveyor to the cutting area. When the log moves from the conveyor to
the cutting area, the sensor 2 will detect that the log has been moved so that motor 1 will turn
off and the conveyor stops running. After entering the cutting area, the log will slide into the
cutting area until it hits the wall which has sensor 3 so that sensor 3 will detect a log in the
cutting area.
When sensor 3 has detected a wooden block in the cutting area, Pneumatic 2 will extract
and motor 2 will turn on. After the pneumatic has extracted a maximum of 4 seconds, the log
will be cut using a cutter connected to motor 2. After pneumatic 2 extracts a maximum of 4
seconds, pneumatic 2 will retract maximally automatically and motor 2 will turn

After the pneumatic 2 maximum retracts, the pneumatic 1 will extract maximally so
that it pushes the wood block that has been cut into its storage area. After the pneumatic 1
maximum extract, pneumatic 1 will retracht automatically. Automatic movements and
sensors are all controlled through a controller, namely a PLC that has been programmed in
such a way.

3.2 ANALYSIS
So in the above simulation it is connected using HMI which is also as a control. So that the system
can be turned on using PB_Start and the Virtual button start. Meanwhile PB_Stop and Virtual Stop
are used to stop the system. On when PB Start is pressed, the indicator light will turn on because
PB Stop uses a contact normally Close. Then the conveyor will start to be active when sensor 1 has
detected, then it will turn off when sensor 2 has detected. When sensor 3 detects then the AC motor
and pneumatic 1 will turn on at the same time. Sensor 3 also activates a timer which functions to
stop the motor and pneumatic 1. While at the timer already calculated it will activate the pneumatic
