(a) Volume of the cylinder ( V cylinder )

Since the cylinder has a radius r =2.5 cm and a height h=5 cm, its volume can be solved as
follows:

V cylinder =π ×r 2 × h

⇒ V cylinder =3.14 ×2.52 ×5

⇒ V cylinder =98.125 c m3

(b) Volume of the sphere ( V sphere )

Since the sphere fits exactly inside the cylinder, it can be seen from the above figure that
the radius of the sphere will be the same as the radius of the cylinder. Thus, the radius of
the sphere is also 2.5 cm. The volume of the sphere can be solved as follows:

4
V sphere = × π ×r 3
3

4
⇒ V sphere= × 3.14 ×2.53
3

⇒ V sphere=65.41 6́ c m 3

(c) Relationship

Dividing the volume of the sphere V sphere by the volume of the cylinder V cylinder :

V sphere 65.41 6́ c m3
=
V cylinder 98.125 c m3

V sphere 2
⇒ =
V cylinder 3

2
⇒ V sphere= V cylinder
3

2
⇒ V sphere= × V cylinder
3

2
Thus, the volume of the sphere is 3 the volume of the cylinder.

Checking:
2
V sphere = × V cylinder
3

2
⇒ V sphere= × 98.125
3

⇒ V sphere=65.41 6́ c m3
