The link AB = 1150mm, BC = 3750mm, BD = 2000mm and DE = 2800mm. The vertical distance between the sliders E and Cis, 2450mm and between A and Cis 750mm. The crank angle is 29° from the horizontal. Determine the acceleration of sliders E and C and the angular acceleration of link DE. The angular acceleration of AB is zero. [20] Question 2 ‘An engine develops an output torque 1600 + 300sin26 Nm where theta (8) the crank angle is measured from some datum. The engine drives a machine which requires a torque of 1600 + 170sin@ Nm. The rotating parts have a mass of 240kg, with a radius of gyration of 0.5m. The ‘mean speed of the engine is 200rev/min. Make a neat sketch of the curves and the find: a) The minimum speed of the engine in rev/min (aa) b) The maximum acceleration of the engine (6) [20] Question 3 3.1 Ahorizontal shaft, supported in bearings at each end, deflects at the center by 0.05mm per 100N of load applied there. When a rotor of mass 300kg is centrally fitted the system responds to an external disturbance and free vertical vibrations of amplitude 0.25mm occur. Calculate the frequency of the system (20) 3.2 The uniform rod shown has a mass of 10kg and is pivoted at point O. A 20kg concentrated mass is attached aC. The rod is maintained in a horizontal position by two springs which have a spring constants S; = 2.4kN/m and S: = 1.6kN/m. Points A and B are one third and two thirds of the total length from point 0. The rod is displaced through a small angle © and released. Find the period and frequency of vibration of the motion (a0) [20] ‘Theory of Machines tll (THMC301) 2016 Year End Main Examination Question 4 ‘A two stroke engine has eight cylinders pitched 600mm apart, the strokes is 300mm and the connecting rod is 750mm long. The reciprocating mass per line is 1500kg, the rotating mass is 900kg and the speed of the engine is 300rev/min. For the firing order 1-7-5-3-8-6-4-2, calculate the maximum value of the unbalanced moments. {20] Question 5 A lat ended tappet is operated by a symmetrical cam having circular arcs for flank and nose profiles. The base circle diameter is 30mm, the nose radius is 4mm, the liftis 10mm and the total angle is 180°. The follower retaining spring is to be designed so that at the beginning of the nose radius the spring force is 10% greater than the value required to hold the follower on the cam and in the full it position the force will be 5% greater than required. The equivalent mass of the valve, spring and tappet is, O.8kg, If the camshaft rotates at 1200rev/min. Calculate: 3a) The flank radius 2) b) The maximum absolute acceleration (5) c) The maximum reaction torque (4) d) The initial compression if the lift at B = 1.8mm. (9) (201
