USTAD MANGU IS A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SUPPRESSED PEOPLE OF INDIA

“I have a voice; I cannot remain silent”. Ustad Mangu is one of the strongest characters in the
story who captures the purity, honesty, and determination of the common man. Sadat Hassan
Manto's story "The New Constitution" has a theme of patriotism, hope, freedom, revolution,
and optimism. In the narrative, Ustad Mangu plays the lead role. When India was still a
British colony, he portrays Mangu as a poor man who runs a Tonga on an Indian street. He
expects great things and positive improvements in the state of his life because of his
insufficient knowledge and innocent belief in politicians' unethical ways, even if every one of
them appear to be false in the end. Ustad Mangu is not a specific character; rather, he
portrays a whole class of naive people who have been fooled by various promises.

Despite the fact that Ustad Mangu was illiterate, he was regarded as the wisest member of his
community. Mangu, a Lahore tongawala, listened intently as his knowledgeable fares
discussed the new constitution. His political knowledge stems from interactions with
knowledgeable people who travel through his Tonga on occasion. His entire understanding
was focused on what he had overheard from his fares. The most striking aspect is that he
believed everything he heard.  He was certain that his dreams would be fulfilled. He has a
history of listening in on his fares. His fellow tongawalas regarded him as a great man
because he was always willing to inform them about current events in the country.
Ordinary people live miserable lives and then die quietly, with none of the promises of a
better life fulfilled.
