POSITION SPECIFICATION

POSITION TITLE: MINING SHIFT ENGINEER (2 Positions)


REPORTING TO: Mines Manager (SMO)

LOCATION: ZUMA 828 COAL, ANKPA, NIGERIA

POSITION SCOPE: The role of the Mine Shift Engineer is to provide leadership and direction to shift
employees in achieving mine production targets as forecasted. Supervise a team of Mining operators in
their daily activities. The Mine Shift Engineer will also assist in the development of Mine employees and
the efficient operation of the Mine.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Overseeing the Mining Shift operation


 Inspect all mine equipment to ensure they are in good operating condition before
deployment.
 Instructing workers in the correct use of tools and machines.
 Ensuring that all workers comply with safety protocols and procedures, including use of
mandatory safety equipment.
 Writing and filling reports based on extraction activities, materials extracted, and
incidents occurred.
 Studying and analysing topographical maps to determine if extraction of minerals is
possible.
 Design & deploy the excavation and extraction strategies, estimating the necessary work
force, machinery, time, and financial costs required.
 Documenting the shift reports and make presentations to the Mines Manager.
 Inspecting and overseeing mining operations.
 Documenting and reporting all mining activities and minerals extracted.
 Conducts research to determine location and methods of extracting minerals, such as
metallic ores and non-metallic substances, such as coal, stone, and gravel: Conducts or
collaborates in geological exploration, and reviews maps and drilling logs to determine
location, size, accessibility, and estimated value of mineral deposit.
 Determines methods to extract minerals, considering factors such as safety, operational
costs, deposit characteristics, overburden depth, and surrounding strata.
 Plans, recommends, and coordinates mining process, type and capacity of haulage
equipment, such as power shovels and trucks, and labour utilization.
 Lays out and directs mine construction operations, such as location and development
positions for excavation benches and access roads.
 Designs, implements, and monitors facility projects, such as water and power supply,
drainage, logistics and transport systems, and material cleaning, grading, and reduction
systems.
 Devise methods and locations to store and replace excavated soil to reclaim mine sites.
 Analyse the work force requirements, equipment needs, and operational costs to
compute and prepare annual budget reports to the Mines Manager.
 Apply knowledge of mining engineering to solve problems concerned with the
environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES:

1. Bachelor Degree (Mining) in a related field or equivalent experience


2. 3 - 5 years of related experience
3. Minimum 3 years of experience in a supervisory role
4. Solid understanding of open pit mining practices and equipment capabilities
5. Solid working knowledge of open pit mining procedures
6. Good understanding and working knowledge of the applicable legislation and regulations for mines
