Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: Develop skills to re-educate function and training with assistive devices

CO2 :: Prioritize the specific evidence based therapeutic approach based on the patient’s
condition

CO3 :: Analyze the therapeutic effects of various exercise techniques and manual therapy

CO4 :: Evaluate the outcomes of various exercise protocols for neuromusculoskeletal disorders

CO5 :: Differentiate therapeutic effects of aerobic training and exercises prescription for different
population
CO6 :: Administer different evidence based protocols for pregnant females and various vascular
system disorders

Unit I
Functional re-education : rolling, bridging, forearm support side lying, prone lying with forearm
support, sitting on the side of the mat, hitching and hiking, side sitting, prone kneeling, crawling,
kneeling, sitting activity, moving to the standing position and sit, limb activity
Assistive devices : definition, types, principles of various assistive devices and training techniques

Unit II
Suspension therapy : principles of suspension therapy, types of suspension therapy, effects and
uses of suspension therapy, techniques of application of suspension therapy, indication and
contraindication
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation : principles of PNF, effects and uses of PNF, description
of PNF diagonal patterns, strengthening and lengthening techniques of PNF
Unit III
Manual therapy : schools of manual therapy, principles and grades, indications and
contraindications, precautions, assessment of joint integrity, assessment of accessory movement, end
feel, assessment of articular & extra-articular soft tissue status, effects and uses of various
mobilisation skills in Maitland, McKenzie, Mulligan, Muscle energy technique, Cyriax, Neurodynamics,
Myofascial Stretching
Stretching : definition of terms related to mobility and stretching, tissue response towards
immobilization and elongation, determinants of stretching exercise, effects of stretching, inhibition
and relaxation procedures, precautions and contraindications of stretching, techniques of stretching
Unit IV
Balance and Neuromuscular Co-ordination : physiology and components of balance, causes of
impaired balance, examination and evaluation of impaired balance, therapeutic management of
impaired balance, definition of coordination, anatomy and physiology of cerebellum with its pathways,
causes for incoordination, principles of coordination exercise, uses and technique of frenkel’s exercise,
progression and home exercise, evidence-based balance programs for fall prevention in the elderly
Posture and respiratory care : definition, active and inactive postures, faulty postures, principles of
re-education (corrective methods and techniques), patient education, basics of respiratory care,
techniques of application of breathing exercises, therapeutic effects of breathing exercises, indication,
aims and types of breathing exercises
Unit V
Fitness, exercise prescription and programming : basic principles of fitness assessment, risk
factor screenings, aerobic/anaerobic fitness, flexibility, principles of exercise prescription and
guidelines for healthy population, special population e.g. children, older adults, diabetes, obesity,
programming for health promotion, therapeutic exercise and high performance individuals
Aerobic Exercise : physiological response to aerobic exercise, examination and evaluation of aerobic
capacity, exercise testing, determinants of an exercise program, normal and abnormal response to
aerobic exercise, physiological changes that occur with training, application of principles of an aerobic
conditioning program for patients, types and phases of aerobic training
Unit VI
Aquatic exercise : definition, properties of water, special equipment for aquatic exercise, aquatic
and temperature control, pool care and safety, precautions and contraindications to aquatic exercises,
exercise interventions using an aquatic environment
Special area of therapeutic exercise : characteristics of pregnancy and labor, anatomical and
physiological changes of pregnancy, overview of pelvic floor anatomy, function and dysfunction of
pelvic floor, pregnancy induced pathology and exercise for the pelvic floor, exercise for uncomplicated
pregnancy and post-partum, exercise management of lymphedema, disorders of lymphatic system,
breast-cancer related lymphatic dysfunction, plyometrics
