A Much Finer Future’s Advise

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed”
- Mahatma Gandhi

Did you know that deforestation is one of the major causes of climate change? You

probably do, after all, it’s something which had always been discussed in school, have been

reported in news through newspapers, TV, radio, and social media. Deforestation is a world-wide

problem but, let’s first talk about what is deforestation? Let me give you an explanation then,

Deforestation refers to the decrease in forest areas across the world that are lost for other uses

such as agricultural croplands, urbanization, or mining activities. Greatly accelerated by human

activities since 1960, deforestation has been negatively affecting natural ecosystems,

biodiversity, and the climate. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the annual

rate of deforestation to be around 1.3 million km2 per decade.

Adjacent to this, let’s talk why deforestation is happening? It actually involves multiple

factors, either of human or natural origin. Natural factors include natural forest fire, or parasite

caused diseases can result in deforestation. Nevertheless human activities are among the main

causes of global deforestation. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the

expansion of agriculture caused nearly 80% of global deforestation, with the construction of

infrastructures such as roads or dams, together with mining activities and urbanization, making

up the remaining causes of deforestation. So do you think the expansion of agriculture is really

good as it was proclaimed to be? Maybe or maybe it isn’t, after all the expansion of agriculture

is a way for us humans to prosper.

Alright then let’s stress out how does it affect us? In actuality it isn’t just us but wild

animals, and plats as well so here are some effects of deforestation, for example the loss of trees

and vegetation which can cause climate change, desertification, fewer crops, and flooding,

increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and a host of problems for indigenous people.

"Forests... are in fact the world's air-conditioning system-the very lungs of the planet-that

help store the largest body of freshwater on the planet... essential to produce food for our planet's

growing population. World rainforests also provide the livelihoods of more than a billion of the

poorest people on this Earth. In simple terms, the rainforests, which encircle the world, are our

very life-support system-and we are on the verge of switching it off as emphasized by Prince

Charles.” Keep in mind that 80% of global warming came from livestock and deforestation .

And lastly, how can we stop deforestation? I remember a quote that says "If you look at it

ecologically, deforestation is high on the list of things which bring devastation. You cut down

trees to build homes, for fuel, and you end up with no trees left, and you have to move on. If you

take the earth as a whole, eventually there's nowhere to move on to related by Clive Anderson.”

This will be our dead end if we don’t educate ourselves how to stop deforestation. Luckily, there

isn’t a question without a solution in this world because in this case, we can fight illegal logging

and limiting logging in old growth forest, Protecting forested areas by creating laws and policies

that ensure forests are kept protected and restored and betting on land practices such as wildfire

corridors, Reforming trade agreements, starting to value differently products obtained through

deforestation, and creating incentives for the use of sustainable forestry certifications such as

FSC, educating local communities and tourists about the need to protect forests and develop and

enrol in ecotourism activities.

As of now, many people are still putting effort to replant deforested areas so as to stop the

deforestation.

This narrative account hopes of raising the attention of the public about deforestation and

how important it is for all of us. Another helping hand will make it much more convenient not

just for us but for the whole world, too! As the saying goes, there’s no pill for regret it’s better

for us to take action now than sooner or later because once we realized how mistaken we are... it

might be too late already for us to regret that we haven’t taken action much earlier.
