CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Communication between humans has been an important factor in our daily routine
and activities. Technological advancement in communication has enhanced the rate of
communication between people. It is noticeable nowadays that electronic communication is
now the most accepted and convenient way of communication.

Technological advancement on communication ranging from voice calls, messaging

to video conferencing has provided companies and individuals the opportunity to hold
meetings, trainings and seminars from the comfort of their homes.

Basically, a communication system is made up of three major components which are

namely; the transmitter, a medium or channel and a receiver. The figure below shows the
block diagram of a communication system.[1]

Figure 1. 1 Block diagram of a telecommunication system

After receiving signals (video or audio) from the input device, the transmitter which is
somethings called modulator superimposes the received signal (analogue or digital) into a
form that can be understood by the corresponding output device. The transmitted signal then
moves through the propagation channel or medium to the receiver. The medium may be free
space, radio frequency transmission line or a fibre optic cable. The receiver then finally filters
the desired signals (this phase is called the demodulation phase) [2].

This project presents the design and construction of a four-way wireless intercom
system in the department of Electrical electronics engineering, college of engineering, Olabisi
Onabanjo university, Ibogun.

The need for this project came while trying to mitigate the stress of having to walk
from one office to the other while trying to communicate with a colleague between member
of staffs in the department at no cost. The high cost of service provider’s charges was also
another reason for this project.

An intercommunication system is a private telecommunication system that allows

typically two or more locations to communicate with each other like a telephone does. A
telecommunication system may be a simple four-way station or a multi -station system. Many
productions which need co-operation of more than few people needs special intercoms that
cover many users [3].

In this project work, discussion will be centred on the design and construction of a
four-way wireless intercommunication system as started earlier that will result into a staff
-staff cost free communication. The circuit will consist of four intercom systems linked
together with a push-to-talk (PTT) switch.

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT

For a while now, when a member of the staff wants to communicate with a colleague
in the department, there is always the need to leave their office to the other staff’s office or by
using their cell phones which in turn costs so much. For this reason, I came up with the
design and construction of an intercom system which will help mitigate the stress of having
to move from one office to the other to communicate at no cost.

3. AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to design and construct a four-way intercom system to
enhanced communication at no cost between members of the staff in the department.

Objectives

 To design a LAN (local area network) server.

 To implement communication through the LAN server.

2
 To configure the system and assign IP addresses for each of the lines.

4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

The intercom system will be a compactible, easy to maintain and cost-effective means of
communication between staffs in the department.

5. SCOPE OF WORK

The four-way intercommunication system is designed to handle four interconnected

telephones and will only be used in the department as stated in the title of the project.

6. LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

The project has the following limitations;

 It is designed just to cover the department.

 It has just four telephones attached to it; more telephones can be added when
modified.
