Joel: began in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. His
murder catapulted into a war across Europe that lasted until 1918. (Present Short clip)

Orlan: Franz Ferdinand, archduke of Austria-Este, German Franz Ferdinand, Erzherzog von
Österreich-Este, also called Francis Ferdinand Austrian archduke whose assassination in
1914 was the immediate cause of World War I.

Barcial: On July 28, 1914, one month to the day after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria
and his wife were killed by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Austria-Hungary declares war
on Serbia, effectively beginning the First World War. (Present Short clip)
Jondel: On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and the tenuous peace
between Europe’s great powers quickly collapsed.

Cobe:Within a week, Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia had lined up against
Austria-Hungary and Germany, and World War I had begun.

The agreement between the countries of the alliance asserted that it was “essentially

Prince: Triple Alliance, secret agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy
formed in May 1882 and renewed periodically until World War I.Although the alliance was
again renewed in 1907 and 1912,Italy entered World War I in May 1915 in opposition to

Cobe: The Allies of World War I or entente Powers were a coalition of countries starting by
France, Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan and the United States against the Central Powers of
Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria and their colonies during the First
World War in 1914 to 1918 (present Short clip)

Joel: Germany realized that a war with Russia meant a war with France, and so its war
plans called for an immediate attack on France.Germany declares war on France, moving
ahead with a long-held strategy, conceived by the former chief of staff of the German army,
Alfred von Schlieffen, for a two-front war against France and Russia.

Orlan: In August 4. 1914, when Germany attacked France through Belgium. Within hours,
Britain declared war on Germany.

Britain and France, both allies of the overrun nation declare war on Germany.

Barcial: Since 1900s, Britain was more concerned about Russia and France than Germany.
Relations between Britain and Germany were very good.The Kaiser said how foolish he
thought the British were. He said that Britain had gone to war for the sake of a “scrap of
paper”.
Jondel: Within a few more days, Britain, France and Russia (the Allies) were all officially at
war with Germany and Austria-Hungary (the Central Powers). What had started as a small,
local problem in the Balkans was turning into the biggest and most brutal war the world had
ever seen

Cobe: Swiss troops were deployed in the Jura along the French border over concern that
the trench war might spill into Switzerland. Of lesser concern was the Italian border, but
troops were also stationed in the Unterengadin region of Graubünden.

Prince: During world war 1 or in 1914 to 1919 the operation of the British blockade sought to
obstruct Germany’s ability to import goods, and thus in the most literal sense starve the
German people and military into submission.

Joel: The British blockade of Germany from 1914-1919 was one of the largest and most
complex undertakings attempted by either side during the First World War. While Britain
employed considerable resources in other areas of the conflict.

Orlan:Australian forces displaced the German authorities on New Guinea early in World War
I.

Barcial: Japan entered the war on the side of the Allies on 23 August 1914, seizing the
opportunity of Imperial Germany’s distraction with the European War to expand its sphere of
influence in China and the Pacific. There was minimal fighting.

Cobe: Italy entered World War I in May 1915 in opposition to Germany and Austria-Hungary.

Joel: The Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers to form the Triple Alliance with the
signing of the August 1914 Turco-German Alliance and The Ottoman Empire entered the
war by carrying out a surprise attack on Russia’s Black Sea coast on October 29 1914, with
Russia responding by declaring war on November 5. 1914
Orlan: In September, 1915, the Germans saw in opportunity in exploiting the Afghan tribes’
strategic advantage against the Allied troops that had left British India to fight in Europe.

Cobe: A combined Austro-Hungarian and German offensive breached the Serbian front from
the north and west in October 1915, while Bulgaria attacked from the southeast. By January
1916, all of Serbia had been occupied by the Central Powers.

Jondel: The Austro-Hungarian occupation zone covered the northern three-quarters of

Archie: The Anglo-Portuguese relationship grew particularly strong during World War I,
when Portugal entered the war formally in 1916 on the side of the Allies and the Portuguese
units fought alongside the British in Europe and East Africa.

Barcial: The Battle of the Somme, which took place from July to November 1916, began as
an Allied offensive against German forces on the Western Front and turned into one of the
most bitter and costly battles of World War I.

Jondel: British forces suffered more than 57,000 casualties—including more than 19,000
soldiers killed—on the first day of the battle alone, making it the single most disastrous day
in that nation’s military history. (show a video )

Cobe: The First Battle of the Somme ended nearly five months later, more than 3 million
soldiers on both sides had fought in the battle, and more than 1 million had been killed or
wounded.
Archie: In 1917,Greece was torn apart by the “National Schism,” a division of the country
into irreconcilable camps supporting either King Constantine I or his prime minister,
Venizélos.

Greece declares war on the Central Powers, ending three years of neutrality by entering
World War I alongside Britain, France, Russia and Italy.

Prince: The immediate grounds for tension were differences between the king and the prime
minister as to Greece’s alignment during World War I.

Barcial: The end of this war meant a shift in power, perception, rebuilding, and stabilization,
but it started something completely new in Germany

Orlan: Germany had formally surrendered on November 11, 1918, and all nations had
agreed to stop fighting while the terms of peace were negotiated.

Cobe:The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with
Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or
more lives.

Jondel:In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure.
