Shivsky: Bleddyn:
I play the 2 eXd5 Nf6 lines as Black We shared our repertoires before the
but hazy with the latest fashions of game and so I knew he played the
2 eXd5 QXd5 these days. Given BDG. I tried to only brush up on
that this is a G/30 time control the basics, kinda like I would before
where inducing tactical mistakes is a normal game.
soup du jour, I decided to gambit
a pawn and take the the game into
my familiar diemer territory (where
I have similar gambit setups against
the French and Caro).

This is embarassingly when I go out I normally play this, essentially try-
of book but rely on a familiarity ing to simplify the game as soon
with these sorts of positions. as possible since I abhor getting at-
tacked

Shivsky: Bleddyn:
... Out of book for me, I only looked
at h3 here. 6 h3 BXf3 7 QXf3 c6
was the extent of my prep. I knew
that 8 g4 was a move here and looks
pretty nuts 8 g4 e6 9 g5 Nd5. Not
my cuppa tea ... but probably the
computer says black is fine.

7…BXf3? 8 QXf3 QXd4+ 9 Be3 Just going forward with my plan
where I have ideas like 10 QXb7, of 6…e6, 7…Be7, 8…O-O and
10 BXd4 and the accompanying 9…Nbd7 I didn’t believe in
iniative will be very bad for Black 7…BXf3 8 RXf3 QXd4+ 9 Kh1
to deal with. Also not seeing any Qd8 10 Bb5+ c6 11 QXd8+
shots with 7…QXd4+?? 8 NXd4 KXd8 12 Bc4.
BXd1 9 RXd1 winning me a piece
for a pawn.

Shivsky: Bleddyn:
Not sure this was optimum place- ...
ment. Sure, it covers the pawn and
secures a weak c5-g1 diagonal but
felt unsure if I had something bet-
ter to play here.

Shivsky: Bleddyn:
Not a good idea to push pawns and ...
create holes around my king but
experience tells me that provoking
9…BXf3 and covering g4 is a good
move to make before the typical 11
Qe1, 12 Qh4 maneuvers in these
diemer gambits. So am feeling pos-
itive that I have the ingredients for
an attack here.

Closing that diagonal down but A surprise. I was afraid of this. I
buying me time to get my queen to thought after 11 g4 I would play
a better square. 11…Nbd7 12 g5 Nd5 13 h4 f5!. I
had this f5 idea in my back pocket,
but was though to visualize the po-
sition well after Nd5 to make sure it
wasn’t losing by force.

I was thinking he’d play 11…Nbd7 I wasn’t confident in this move.

not developing his queenside pieces
increases opportunities for me (or
so I think).
