HUNGER GAMES TRILOGY

DIRECTED BY: Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins, an American author and screenwriter, she began her professional
career writing children’s television. She worked on staffs of Nickelodeon shows, including
the Emmy-nominated hit Clarissa Explains All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo and
many more. She is best known for the immensely popular Hunger Games series of a
young-adult novels.

“Happy Hunger Games! May the odds be ever in your favor.” A famous line from
the movie by Effie Trinket. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a dystopian type of genre,
wherein the world you live in is not perfect, or the society that is not human-friendly one,
it is full of human misery, oppression, disease, and overcrowded.

Hunger Games follows a story in the ruins of a place once known as North America
lies a nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The
Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one
boy and one girl between ages twelve and eighteen to participate in the Annual Hunger
Games, a fight to death live on TV. Sixteen years old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death
sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has
been close to death before, and survival for her, is second nature. Without really meaning
to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that
weigh survival against humanity and life against love. When Katniss Everdeen survived
the Hunger Games, the Capitol wanted revenge, against all odds, both of the tributes from
District 12 are still alive, they should be relieved, especially Katniss, but now there are
whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol, a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have
helped create. As the nation watches both of the tributes, the stakes are higher than ever.
One false move and the consequences will be unimaginable.

This novel’s location is in the world of Panem, the story is told in the first-person
from the perspective of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year old living in District 12 of Panem. The
tone of the movie are somber, gritty, thrilling suspenseful and exhilarating. The
protagonist of this trilogy is Katniss Everdeen, the antagonist is somewhat hard to
identify, as we are not quite sure whom to blame for the harsh realities of Katniss’ life. But
as we all know, it is always President Snow or shall we say, this trilogy has a lot of set of
enemies. The discussion about who the true enemies recurs throughout the series. The
major conflict of this trilogy is Katniss’s struggle to survive and save the people from the
Capito without losing her sense of self. The entire Hunger Games tournament is an
allusion to the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The arena of the Games is treated
as a living entity that interacts with the tributes. Aside from the other tributes, it is the
biggest threat and sometimes the toughest opponent, as no one but the Gamemakers
knows what it will do next.
This story somehow tells us that no matter what your circumstances are, you
should stand up for what you believe in. Katniss is helpless in the face of her enemies. Her
district, District 12, is on the bottom rung of the power ladder in a dystopian world. She
is the poorest of the poor in her impoverished neighborhood.
