An Accident At The Supermarket

“Omelettes…I want omelettes!” Jason muttered groggily to

himself as he woke up. It was Sunday morning and he was craving for
some omelettes. He flipped the refrigerator open and inspected
every nook and cranny of it. Alas, there were no eggs.

Jason’s mother saw what had happened and decided to visit the
supermarket to stock up on eggs. Since no one was at home, she
asked Jason and his impish little brother to tag along with her.

“Be careful when you are moving around,” Jason’s mother

warned once they entered the supermarket, “There are a lot of
fragile items on display.” However, Jason turned a deaf ear to his
mother’s words. While his mother was busy checking out the
promotions shelf, Jason got bored. Without warning, he gave his
brother’s ear a nasty twist and giggled when his brother flinched.

“Catch me if you can, loser!” Jason taunted. With that, he

burst into life and started capering down the aisles, with his
brother hot on his heels.

Little did they know that a brown wall of impending doom

awaited them ten metres away. Jason charged ahead blindly,
occasionally turning his head around to check how far away his
brother was. He did not notice that there was a stack of egg cartons
in his path until it was too late.

“Plang!” Jason collided with the stack, sending the egg cartons
crashing down to the ground like bowling pins toppling over after a
strike. He tumbled and fell straight into the ‘work of art’ he had
created – the puddles of yolk and eggshells that had splashed across
the floor for the world to see.

The supermarket now reeked of the revolting stench of raw

eggs. Joe was nowhere to be seen. Jason’s first thought was to
escape the ‘crime scene’ before anyone found out. Unfortunately,
the loud clattering of the cartons had caught the attention of the
store staff. A grumpy looking cleaner soon arrived to mop up the
mess. Jason cowered in the corner and avoided her wrathful glare.
The manager came afterwards and made Jason’s mother pay for the
damages. Jason’s mother apologised sheepishly for the trouble
caused and promised to discipline the boys when they got home.

True enough, Jason and his brother were caned once they got
home and had their comic books confiscated for a week. This
embarrassing and painful experience left an indelible mark on the
boys’ memory. They vowed never to be mischievous again in public
places.
