Art and Social Networking:

Virtual Influences Affecting the Real World

Unit 1: “Social Networking in the Past and its Contemporary Influence in Art”

“Social Networking in the Past and its Contemporary Influence in Art” is the first unit of the

three-unit spiral curriculum. Unit one is the unit that introduces the past and contemporary

influences of visual communication through art in social networking. Students will understand

the multiple roles in social networking. Social networking relies on both the receivers and

producers of distributing visual communications through art. This comes to play with students

becoming socially aware and aware of their role in society. As students focus on affects of social

networking in the past and contemporary social networking, they will be critically analyzing

visual communication and the ways it can be changed/altered. There is also the opportunity to

conduct an interview on someone else’s experience with social networking in the past. Students

will visually communicate the experience through a collage. The comparison between visual

communication in the past and contemporary social networking is another main focus during unit

one.
