MICROBIAL FUEL CELL FOR WASTE WATER TREATMENT

Abstract:-

Environmental challenges related to water sanitation and management are not only
constricted to the to underdeveloped countries, instead they are more common worldwidely.
Environmental pollution at ground level is mainly because of waste water sources. These waste
water sources were comes from industries in large quantity than the other. Because of increased
population and industrialisation, these waster management has became a major threat. The
present technologies are not enough to fulfill the everincresing water sanitation demands. This
is because of the reason that they are energy and cost intensive.

Microbial fuel cell waste water system use microorganisms in bioelectrochemical

catalytic activity to produce energy from the oxidation of organic substrate and in some cases
inorganic substrates. These substrates are found in agricultural waste, organic wastes from
dairies, food, urban sewage and other waste streams of sewage from industries.

The purpose of this seminar is to present a review on recent literature with two
objectives. It starts with an overview of current treatment enrgy needs and perspective energy
recovery solutions. Then a thorough examination of waste water treatment principle, usage of
substrate i.e organic removal, nutrient and metal removal and recent advancements in the
process. In microbial fuel cells, the removal or sanitizing capabalities are more with thorough
exploration of several topics like organic removal capacity, process perfomance and potential
environmental implications.

Microbial Fuel Cells convert organic wastes into energy. Hence it enables the direct
production or recovery of electric energy. It enables the real time monitering and control of
waste water along eith the production of the electric energy. With the thorough analysis of
challenges and opportunities of microbial fuel cell for waste water treatment, it provides a good
electric energy along with the the good sanitisation of water. This reduces the waste water
released from industries, dairies, urban sewages.
