Whatis a Synthesis Paper?


 The term “synthesis” means to combine separate elements to form a whole.
 write a literature review or other paper that requires the use of a variety of sources.
 Writes a paper that make a variety of connections among source material so that the
papers are not organized source-by-source but are organized topic-by-topic to create
a whole text
 Aims to create an understanding

2 types of Syntheses
 Explanatory syntheses seek to bring sources together to explain a perspective and
the reasoning behind it.
 Argumentative syntheses seek to bring sources together to make an argument. Both
types of synthesis involve looking for relationships between sources and drawing
conclusions.

 Introduction with thesis statement
 provides the background of the topic
 Thesis is the central argument of the entire paper.

 May discuss how it is done
 Present Arguments
 Pressing ethical issues and concerns
 Concession
 Use literatures (at least 10 literatures dated 2010-present)
 Bulk of the work
Conclusion
 Show stand/judgement
 Should be a summary of the overall paper.
 May restate the main points and address any unanswered questions.
References
 lists, alphabetically by author or by date of publication, the references cited in the
body of the paper.
