QN 1: Differentiate between the Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Initiative

Free Software Foundation (FSF) is a non-profit organization that supports the development of


free software (software that grants the user the freedom to share, study, and modify it.)
It asserts that a free software must adhere to the following four pillars of freedom
 The freedom to deploy the software for any use case without any restrictions
 The freedom to study how the software works and modify it according to your needs and
preferences.
 The freedom to freely re-distribute the software to assist someone in need.
 The freedom to enhance the performance of the software and release your enhancements
for the community to benefit.

WHILE

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is the non-profit organization that supports the
development of open source software.

It asserts that any open source software must adhere to the following criteria:

 Free redistribution of the software.


 The source code should be publicly available.
 The software can be modified and distributed in a different format from the original
software.
 The software should not discriminate against persons or groups.
 The software should not restrict the usage of other software.

QN 3: List and briefly describe at least three open source Internet applications that a
currently in use.
Answer:
i. Mozilla Firefox.
ii. FileZilla
iii. Odoo

Descriptions.
1) Mozilla Firefox.

Mozilla Firefox is a customizable internet browser and a free open source software. It
offers thousands of plugins that are accessible with a single click of your mouse and it is
available for Android, iOS, Windows and Linux. 
2) FileZilla.

This free file transfer protocol (FTP) client allows you to manage server file systems
remotely. FTP is what enables you to put your new web pages up onto the internet,
transferring your web page files to the computer server so that other people can access
them.

3) Odoo.

Odoo has a range of helpful open source software tools for businesses. Their POS system
comes either as a standalone product or integrated with their other solutions, including
their tools for project management, ERP and SCM. It links directly with the Odoo
inventory so you can keep track of stock, and also links with their marketing and sales
solutions and eCommerce tools, providing a holistic approach to the sales process. It
works on both Windows and Linux and is released under the LGPL version 3.

QN 4: Describe the Dual License Business Model.


List at least two applications that fall under this business model.

Is a situation where the same piece of software can be obtained under two different
software licences. Usually one of these licences is an open source licence and the other is a
proprietary licence Using dual licensing, licensors can distribute software to licensees under a
proprietary model as well as an open source model, allowing the licensor to simultaneously
leverage the advantages of both types of licenses.
