LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATHEMATICS 8 QUARTER 4

WEEK 6
ILLUSTRATING AN EXPERIMENTS, OUTCOMES, SAMPLE SPACE AND EVENTS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Life has a lot of uncertainties. Oftentimes, our decisions in life are done under conditions of
uncertainty. These are the probabilities of life. Your goal in this activity is to learn and understand
the key concepts of probability and the fundamental counting principle by conducting several
experiments. Let’s start understanding the following concepts.

EXPERIMENT - is an activity with an observable result like tossing a coin, rolling a die, or
picking a card from standard deck of cards without looking which could be repeated and
which have well- defined result.

OUTCOMES- is a result of an experiments.

SAMPLE SPACE - is a set of all possible different outcome of an experiment.

EVENT is a subset of a sample space of an experiment.

Illustrative example: Let’s experiment!

DIRECTIONS: Perform the experiment carefully and fill in the table correctly.

Experiment Sample space Possible outcomes

You toss a coin H(head), T(tail) 2

You toss two coins HH, HT, TH,TT 4

You roll a die 1,2,3,4,5,6 6

NOTE: Die is the singular form of dice. When you roll a balance die once, there are 6 possible
outcomes which are 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. Getting an even number includes 3 outcomes; these are 2, 4, 6.
Getting an even number is called an Event.

LEARNING COMPETENCY

-Illustrates an Experiment, outcome, Sample Space, and Event (M8GE-IVf-1)

DIRECTIONS: Analyze the problem carefully and fill in the table below correctly.

You are holding a dice. Your brother/ sister is holding a coin. If both of you roll and toss the
dice and coin simultaneously, how many outcomes are possible? Please refer to the figure below

Sample space Number of possible outcomes

Ex. H1,H2

Activity 2. Complete
me!
DIRECTIONS: Determine the possible outcome, sample space and event for each
experiment. Complete the table below.

10- 25
2. Getting a number less that 6 Getting number less
than 6
in rolling a die
3. Getting exactly 2 heads

Activity 3. Experiment
time!
DIRECTIONS: Determine the possible outcomes and the sample space given the events in each
experiment.
1. A day of the week drawn in random.

Events Sample space Possible outcome

a. starts with a “T”
b. has more than 6 letters
c. has letter “E” in it
d. starts with an “F”

2. A circle is divided into 8 equal parts to form a spinner and numbered. The pointer is spun, it will
stop at;
Events Sample space Possible outcome
a. a number
greater than 4
b. a prime number
c. a “6”
d. An even number

3. Drawing card from the standard deck of 52 cards.

ace
b. Getting a
heart
