techniques.

Nutraceutical: Any substance that is a food or part of a food that provides health benefits including the
prevention and treatment of disease.

Functional foods: Foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition.

Food Preservatives: Chemicals that prevent food from spoilage due to microbial growth.

Colorants: Substances that impart colour when it is added to food.

2. Biotechnology is the exploitation of biological processes for industrial and other purposes, especially
the genetic manipulation of microorganisms for the production of antibiotics, hormones, etc.
Biotechnology is classified as medical, agricultural, industrial and environmental.

3. Foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition. Examples include; flax
seeds, almonds, cauliflower, apples.
Food additives are substances added to food to enhance its flavour or appearance or to
preserve it.
