Horse Feathers! 21-inch weighted-bottom doll Materials required 5/8 yard 45-inch fabric 1 4-inch battenburg doily 2 yards 1/8- or 1/4-inch ribbon 1/2 yard 1/2-inch ribbon 1 pair toddler size 5-6 socks with 4-inch ribbed tops 4-inch piece of marabou feather boa (or 10 to 12 downy feathers) 2 buttons, 1/2-inch, 2-holes, black 2x4-inch piece of heat-n-bond 1 cup pellets, sand, kitty litter, etc., Stuffing button or crochet thread glue gun and glue sticks original design by Vada Dolph Cramalot Inn Crafts Lexington, KY USA ©1998 Horse Feathers! 21-inch weighted-bottom doll Making your Horse Feathers! Doll: Please note: If you prefer, vou can hand sew all seams and areas where Ihave indicated glue Make the Body: Cut body and jumpsuit from same fabric. Sew all around body, leaving open a one side, for stuffing, Fold at corners and stitch across io form boxed bottom, 1-1/2 x 4 inches, See pattern for deals Turn right side out, Pour pellets or sand into bottom. Stuff. Irdesired. insert dowel or popsicle stick into neck area to stiffen. Close opening Make Jumpsuit Sew shoulder scams. Hem sleeves. Sew side/underarm seams, Hem legs, Sew front and back seams, leaving 3 or 4 inches open at neck, Sew inside leg seams, Turn, press, Place body into jumpsuit, through neck opening, Sew or glue front closed, and attach to body around the neck line, being sure neck protrudes well, and suit sits properly on shoulders. Make a slit inthe center ofthe doily collar to ft over neck, and arrange collar as desired. You may need to cut ital the back and overlap ends, Glue in place. Set aside. Make Head Cut ribbed top off both socks, about 1/2-inch below ribbing, Set aside for hands and fect. Using picture and detail drawings for ‘guides, stuff one sock, shaping as you go. Don't overstuf , or she will have too large a head. (Close the opening atthe back ofthe head, by stitching by hand along stitching line before trimming away excess fabric. Pull up the thread to shape jawline. (Trimming aller making this seam allows you to change iti you wish.) The mane will cover this seam Tate. Now for the details: Eyes: With long needle, and strong thread, enter at center back of head at seam (X), exit at one eye (Y) add button, enter near (Y), exit at other eye (Z) add button , return fo (X), Pull threads o indent eyes, and tie securely Mouth: stitch through muzzle from dot (1) near end of sock toe seam, to other side, loop around muzzle, take a tiny stitch at dot (1) , pull threads to indent mouth, and tie securely. Poke needle info chin and pull a litle extra stuffing into lower lip area, This will hold the mouth-line in place, Nostrils: Stitch from under chin to nostril, fo other nostril, back to chin. (A~B~-B~A) Pull to indent and ti. Ears: Insert heat and bond info remaining sock, antl press to bond. It helps to pre-press and stretch the sock a bit before bonding, Cut 2 cars. Fold and glue along bottom of ears, 10 hold fold in place. Glue to cad. "Now glue the head fo the body. Hold securely in place until plne is set ‘To attach the mane: Make a stitch in head at forehead, between and just below ears, with heavy thread, Lay end of marabou Teather boa over slitch and tie. Make Hands and Feet: Turn ribbing inside out and press. This wll help to stretch ita bt, making it easier to sew the two ‘seams down the middle without using up too much ofthe fabric, Use small stitches. (This will sem to make very narrow tubes, but there is lols of stretch ), Cut apart. Turn and stull to about 1 {0 1-1/2 inch diameter,and 3-1/2 inches long. Stitch opening closed, inishing: insert hand palling snugely so hand will not pull out. Put several dabs of gine along gathers between hand and sleeve, to secure, Tie 12- length of 1/Sth-inch ribbon over threads. Repeat for feel. Note: you may prefer to make a row of long running stitches along gathering line, using a heavy thread, and pull it snug to it the hand. lo sleeve. Jeaving about one inch showing , gather up sleeve along gathering line over hand, tie with heavy thread, nich Tie 1/2-inch ribbon around waist.
