专项技能训练(4)
(Text 1) 内江竞赛
W: Excuse me. Do you have change for a ten-dollar note?
M: I’m sorry, but I don’t have any cash on me. Why not go to the bank near the shopping center
across the street?

2
(Text 2)
M: Can you recommend something that a school girl of 7 or 8 would like?
W: I’d suggest this Barbie doll, sir. Young girls today love it.
(Text 3)
M: What do you think of this one?
W: It’s really not my cup of tea, too modern and unusual.
M: But look at the colors and forms — very imaginative.
W: Yes, but I prefer paintings of beautiful landscapes and people.
(Text 4)
W: I’m looking for someone who knew Barbara Walters when she was young. I’m told you lived
there.
M: Yes, I do, but I’m just fifty years old. Barbara Walters had already moved away when I was
born.
(Text 5)
M: I heard that you got a pay raise. Congratulations!
W: Oh, you must have mistaken me for Jenny. She got a pay raise, though I was supposed to get
one, too.
(Text 6) 内江竞赛
W: What’s your plan for the summer, Ted?
M: I’d wanted to spend the summer at the beach in Florida, but my parents want me to go to China
instead.
W: Why do they want you to go to China?
M: You know, I’m learning Chinese now. They think my Chinese will improve fast if I spend two
months in China.
W: I’ve always wanted to travel around China. If I were you, I’d be very happy to spend two
months there.
M: The problem is that they’ll give me only 500 dollars for the trip, so I’ll have to find part-time
work to cover my expenses there.
W: Ah, that’s challenging. No wonder you don’t want to go.
(Text 7)
W: What’s that you’re listening to, David?
M: This is one of Sam Smith’s songs. I really love his music.
W: Oh, me too. Have you read about the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles?
M: No. I just know that it was on Sunday night at the Staples Center. So did Sam Smith win
anything?
W: Oh, yes — Sam Smith’s hit song Stay With Me was named Song of the Year.
M: Oh, I love that song. Did he win any other awards?
W: Yes, he won Record of the Year, and the first honor of the night — Best New Artist was also
given to him.
M: Wow. I can’t believe he won so many awards.
W: I know — and that’s not all. He also walked away with Best Pop Vocal Album.
M: That’s amazing. He’s really an amazing artist.
W: Yes, he definitely is.

M: What a lovely dog! How long have you had it?
W: Oh, I’ve had him for years, though he went missing about three months ago and we were just
reunited the day before yesterday.
M: You mean you lost him for three months and just found him on Monday?
W: Yes.
M: That’s amazing. What happened?
W: Well, one afternoon about three months ago, I went out to the supermarket, and when I
returned I found my dog was gone.
M: Did you ever find out what happened to him?
W: I asked my neighbors if they’d seen him, and a few of them said they saw him running after a
truck. My dog loves to chase moving vehicles.
M: Ah. So how did you find him?
W: Well, I looked all over the neighborhood, but no luck. Then, I posted pictures of him online,
and luckily, about a week ago, I received a phone call from a young man, who told me that he
had found my dog.
M: That’s really amazing.
W: Yes. I was so happy. I love my little dog.

M: Hello, Lai. Thank you for sparing some time for readers of our website. So what inspired you
to write Listen, Slowly?
W: I wanted to look at cultural differences between teenagers in the United States and teenagers in
Vietnam.
M: Can you describe the main character, Mia, a Vietnamese American?
W: Sure. Mia just wants to be a California beach girl. She has no interest in Vietnam. But after
spending two weeks in Vietnam, she comes to the conclusion that she may as well make the
best of it.
M: Why did you want to put Mia in a completely different environment?
W: If Mia is going to connect with her past, she’s going to have to leave the world she knows.
M: Is the main character based on your own daughter?
W: Yes. My daughter understands Vietnamese but doesn’t speak it.
M: Did you use any of your own experience in the novel?
W: The grandmother character in the novel is very much my own mother. I am the age of Mia’s
parents.
M: Are you working on a new novel?
W: I’m writing a novel about an American boy who dreams of becoming a cowboy.
M: Well, thank you for sharing so much with us.
W: My pleasure.
(Text 10)
Malala has never been ordinary. When she was just 11 years old, she started blogging about
the effects of the Taliban control of her hometown. Taliban members believe young girls should
not go to school. They closed schools in Malala’s hometown. Malala spoke out in public about her
desire to go back to school, and she was later able to return to class. She continued to blog and
speak out about girls’ rights to education. On October 9, 2012, the Taliban tried to silence her. A
gunman got on the truck she and her classmates used as a school bus and shot her in the head.

Malala survived, and showed great courage and optimism during her long recovery. During this
time, she became a symbol of the struggle for girls’ rights all over the world.
Malala has also become an international symbol for peace. In 2011, she won Pakistan’s
National Youth Peace Prize. On October 10, 2014, Malala was awarded the 2014 Nobel Peace
Prize. She is the youngest Nobel winner in history.
Malala says the prize is an “encouragement” to go forward with her mission to help kids. She
wants to tell children all around the world that they should stand up for their rights.
