M: Hello, Parkson College. May I help you?
W: Yes. I’m looking for information about courses on architecture for the fall semester.
(Text 2)
M: They say there’ll be a big snowstorm tonight, and the cold weather will last quite a few days.
W: Aren’t you going to Florida tomorrow? The weather is quite nice there.
M: No. The meeting has been put off.
(Text 3)
M: How’s the new job going?
W: Well, I’m learning a lot of new things, but the pay is a bit lower than my last job.
M: I’m sure you’ll get a pay raise soon if you work really hard.
(Text 4)
W: I have to carry this box to the eighth floor, but it’s too heavy for me. Could you help me,

please?
M: I’d like to, but I overdid weight-lifting yesterday in the gym, and I hurt myself.
(Text 5)
M: I heard you’d booked a train ticket for your mother. Why didn’t she take a plane?
W: She has a heart problem, so her doctor recommended that she not take a plane.
(Text 6)
W: Come on! We need to buy all of the things we need for Sophie’s party before the store closes.
M: It’s just half past five now. We still have an hour left. Why are you in such a hurry?
W: The store closes half an hour earlier from November to February, so we’d better hurry.
M: OK, but is it really necessary to throw a party for Sophie? She’s just eight years old, after all.
W: I promised to throw a party for her last year. I don’t want to break my word, and her friends
are all planning to come.
M: Ah, I see. So do you have any special plans for her party?
W: Yes. I’ve arranged for a magician to show up at the party and do some tricks for Sophie and
her friends.
(Text 7)
W: What’s your plan for the summer?
M: I’m considering going to Cambridge.
W: Wow. Cambridge is ranked as one of the best schools in the world.
M: Yes, I know! I especially want to see the famous King’s College Chapel. It is considered a
must-see in Cambridge.
W: Can you visit it for free?
M: No. It’s only free for locals, but if I bring my student ID, I’ll only need to pay £3. Otherwise,
I’ll have to buy an adult ticket, which is £4.5.
W: How much does it cost to take a train there?
M: It costs £6 for a one-way ticket from London to Cambridge. I will then just have to walk about
a mile from the train station to the campus.
W: Hope you have a good journey!
(Text 8)
W: Grandpa, how is life now that you’ve retired?
M: Not so good. There are not that many retired people in the neighborhood and most of them
don’t like going out to do anything, so I end up staying at home most of the time, too.
W: Grandpa, have you heard about AARP?
M: No. What is it?
W: AARP is the American Association of Retired Persons. It is a non-government organization
and interest group, founded in 1958.
M: What was it established for?
W: To improve the quality of life of people over the age of 50. Members can get special products
and services and can receive other unique benefits. The organization also publishes a
magazine.
M: I love reading magazines. What is the magazine called?
W: AARP The Magazine. It used to be known as Modern Maturity.
M: How often does it come out?
W: Once every two months. Grandpa, why not join the organization? It might make your life

much more interesting.
M: I’ll give it a thought.
(Text 9)
W: Hello, Bob, isn’t it? You’ve had a bit of a fall. What were you doing? Going too fast on your
bicycle?
M: Yes, doctor. I fell off going round a corner.
W: We’ll take a look at you. Mm. That’s a nasty cut. Your leg must be hurt a lot. I’ll have to close
that up.
M: I’ve got a cut on my hand too, doctor.
W: Hmm … It looks worse than it is. The nurse will clean it up for you, and it will be OK soon.
Now, does it hurt anywhere else?
M: My left arm hurts a lot, and I can’t move it.
W: Well, there’s nothing broken, but I can see that you’ve hit your shoulder. It’ll be sore for a few
days. Now, did you bang your head at all?
M: Yes, I did. My head hit the bicycle as I fell, but it doesn’t hurt now.
W: Did you feel dizzy after the fall? Or do you feel dizzy now?
M: No, not at all.
W: Look up there … I’m just going to shine this light in your eyes. That’s fine. OK, I’ll just sew
up that cut on your leg, and the nurse will put a dressing on it. Then after the nurse finishes
cleaning the cut on your hand, you can go home.

The Dickerson family has a routine they follow every day. They wake up, the kids get ready
for school and then the parents set off for work, but on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, a dog changed
their routine.
As Mr Dickerson was leaving for work, he heard the cries of a dog coming from his yard. He
went to check on the noise and found a young dog in his garden frozen to the ground. Mr
Dickerson rescued the small creature and immediately took it inside. The family would often find
small animals in the garden, such as small rabbits or squirrels, but they’d never found a dog there.
Inside, the dog acted like it was hungry and so Mrs Dickerson put some dog food into a bowl.
It went straight for the bowl and ate up everything there.
At first, the parents intended to look for a good home for the dog, since they already had two
parrots and thought that it wouldn’t get along with the birds. However, the kids fell in love with
the dog, so they decided to keep it. Now the dog lives a very happy life with the family.
