 As old as 1660 to 1440 B.C.
 Native of South Asia – India-Burma
 Then traveled to Middle East, East Africa, Australia
 Introduced in USA during late 19th Century.
 Important pulse crop.
 Seed cooked, roasted, milled, split used as “Dal”.
 High protein 22-24 %, easily digestible.
 Leaves & stalk used as fodder.
 Green plants used as green manure for soil
improvement.

Soil & Climate
 Crop of tropics & subtropics.
 Survive in wide range of temperatures.
 Requires warm climate.
 Unproductive when temperature lowers than 10 oC.
 Optimum temperature ranges 20 - 30 oC.
 Grown on wide range of soils i.e. Sandy loam to
heavy clay.
 Best suited are sandy loam soils.
 Tolerate drought but sensitive to water logging &
salinity.

Cultural Practices
 Usually planted with minimum preparation
 Leveling for good seed & moisture
distribution
 One deep plowing for infiltration of water
 Two plowings with planking
 Being legume crop fixes atmospheric N
 20 kg N & 60 kg/ha P

 Depends on method of sowing
 Drill sowing 20 kg /ha
 Increase 2 – 4 kg if broadcasted
 Lines 30 cm apart with 10 cm between plants
 Mid February to End March for spring crop
 Autumn crop Early July to Late August

 Adverse effect of weeds on yield
 Weeding before sowing / during plowing
 Four to Six weeks after sowing
 Hand tools weeding before start of flowering
 In Both irrigated & rainfed areas

 Harvested when 90 % pods are mature
 Mature pods picked & green left
 Harvested plants left for sun drying
 Threshing when plants are completely dry
 If used thresher used keep at low speed
