Midterm – Activity # 1

1. What is the importance of map and map reading especially in navigation?

- Map reading and map drawing are important skills to learn in geography. Maps use symbols like lines
and different colours to show features such as rivers, roads, cities or mountains. Young geographers
need to be able to understand symbols.

5. What are the different types of maps? Among these, which one is used widely used in navigation and

why?

- Topographic maps, Geologic maps, Biogeographic maps, Environmental maps, Meteorological

maps. The Topographic maps usually use in navigation stand out from the other offerings by
showing detailed elevation, with contour lines helping to map the landscape. Ordinance Survey
maps are arguably the best-known type of topographical maps, but thousands of other
mapmakers have created detailed alternatives, and even if you can’t see specific landmarks –
lakes or roads, for example – it’s still possible to work out your exact location by following the
contours and checking out the landscape around you.

6. What are the types of map Projections?

- Robinson

- Mercator

- Planar, Azimuthal or Zenithal projection

- Conic Projection

7. What is the importance of GPS (Global Positioning System)?

- GPS, or the Global Positioning System, is a global navigation satellite system that provides location,
velocity and time synchronization. GPS is everywhere. You can find GPS systems in your car, your
smartphone and your watch. It is based on the use of satellites in Earth orbit that transmit
information which allow to measure the distance between the satellites and the user.
