Color Grading for Filmmaking: The Vision, Art, and Science

1 Color correct
White balance (first temperature, if neccesary tint).
Saturation and contrast.

2 Match color
Match color between different shots.
Be careful about blacks. Blacks must be equals between shots.

3 Skin tone
In Vectorscope, skin tone must be in a line between yellow and red (1/3 red, 2/3 yellow).
Make a mask for skins, and tweak midtones or offset to put in that line.

Components:
• Midtones: base orange (regardless of the actor ethnicity or the rest of the color
grade).
• Shadows: a like bit of red color to give the appearance of blood flow in the skin.
• Hightlights: should take on the ambient light color in the scene.
DaVinci Resolve:
1. Make a new node and a mask for skins (doesn't matters if you have more).
2. Select Vectorscope (show Skin Tone Line).
3. Add a Power Window for the face.
4. Tweak offset or midtones to put the colors in the skin line.
5. Shut off the power window.
6. In “Log”, tweak the “Low Range” and the “High range” controls to select which part
of image is involve in “Midtones” corrections.
