human being's search

for the meaning in life

1
Frankl's beliefs

Life has meaning under all

circumstances, even the
most miserable ones.
Frankl's beliefs

Our main motivation for

living is our will to find
meaning in life.
Frankl's beliefs
We have the freedom to
find meaning in what we do,
and what we experience, or
when we are faced with a
situation of unchangeable
suffering

SUFFERING
AND DEATH
Buddhism
looks at suffering as
1. suffering of suffering
(dukkha-dukkha)
2. suffering of change
(viparinama-dukkha)
3. all-pervasive suffering
(sankhara-dukkha)
Buddhism
causes of suffering:
1. attachment
2. anger
3. ignorance
Buddhism
A way to end our
suffering is to change
our state of mind.
Hinduism

the sensual attachment to
the material world and to the
pleasures of the flesh
Fr. Paul O'Sullivan
reasons why suffering appears so hard
1. we are not taught what suffering is
2. we are not taught how to bear it
3. we are not taught the priceless
value of suffering
Greed is the real
cause of our
suffering

separation of the
body and mind
MIRAGE OR
BLURRED VISION
dark images appear; the sense of seeing dissolves; the
body becomes weak and powerless; and there is a
feeling of “sinking and falling
SMOKE VISIONS
There is the feeling of being absorbed in smoke; the
sense of hearing dissolves; pleasant or unpleasant
neutral feelings cease; and the body fluids dry up.
FIREFLIES
One feels surrounded by fireflies; the sense of smell
dissolves; memories of friends and enemies fade
away.
BUTTER-LAMP
Ones sees a dying flame; the sense of taste dissolves;
the body cannot be moved anymore; thoughts of
worldly activities stop; the breath ceases. This stage is
western science’s equivalent of clinical death.
WHITE VISION
A vacuum filled with white light appears.
RED VISION
A vacuum filled with red light, like dawn appears.
BLACK VISION
With this appearance of darkness, one slowly loses
consciousness.
CLEAR LIGHT OF DEATH
Appearance of an empty vacuum. Few people have a
sufficiently trained awareness to experience this
clearly.
GREEKS

See death as not

deserving of one's
worry
Epicurus
When we die, we are
either non-existent
or there is a life after
death.
Epictetus

We are not losing life

but returning it to
God
Christians
Dying enables us to
be perfectly united
with Christ
Marxists

Do not believe in the

next life
Existentialists
Death is inevitable.
Accept and find its
significance.

reason why there
is resistance to
death.
