Contamination Based on Moss as Bioindicator in Industrial Area

Description
S. M. T. Hoang, Thu Dau Mot University, Vietnam
Environmental pollution is a concern of countries around the world, especially developing countries, including Vietnam. Most often,
sources of atmospheric elemental contamination are caused by three primary sources: the production process of factories and
enterprises, sources of pollution using chemicals in agricultural production, and sources of pollution from vehicles. This study using
Barbula indica moss is considered a bio-monitoring station because this moss is low-level plants with false roots and sucking nutrients
through leaves and stems. Barbula indica moss has a considerable ability to absorb metals in the air, growing naturally in industrial areas.
After two months of exposure in fifty different industrial areas, the moss samples were prepared, and the concentration of twenty seven
heavy metal elements was determined by the fully reflective X-ray fluorescence method. Factor analysis has been applied to the
concentration data, and seven main factors, which characterized five possible sources of the air pollution affecting the investigated
industrial area, have been identified. The correspondence between the research results and the reality of the air pollution in the studied
sites has proved a high possibility of studying air pollution of heavy metal.
