Extracting DNA from Strawberries:

● Detergent
● Salt
● Rubbing Alcohol
● Popsicle Sticks(?)
● Strawberries

● Seeds are on the outside, therefore DNA is easy to extract

● Place frozen strawberries inside plastic bag

○ DNA inside strawberry cells, gotta get it to purify
● Smash the strawberry (lysis solution)
○ This breaks open strawberry cells to get to the DNA
○ Breaks cell walls to help break DNA out
● Use 2 teaspoons of detergent
● ½ teaspoon of salt
● Half a cup of water
● Stir and mix it
● Pour the cup into the plastic bag
○ Busts ‘em open
● Don’t create bubbles when mixing the lysis solution with strawberry juice
○ Frees the solution
● Filter it to separate the liquid the strawberry guts
● Get the liquid pushed out of the filter to get the water out
○ Don’t break the filter
● Pour an equal amount of rubbing alcohol into the juice (to precipitate)
○ Creates two different layers, DNA forming at the top into solid
● Use popsicle sticks to touch it
