Characteristics of a good piano

teacher !!

Brief info.
I for one may have never experienced the joys of taking up piano tutelage from a tender age, but
that never discouraged me from learning the instrument in my teens even if it meant teaching
myself.

But when I was referred to a classically trained teacher on my first year, I may recall some of the
qualities I think every piano teacher needs to inherit.

So my current piano teacher put in the trusted hands on Ruhan Nabal, and the first quality if a
good piano teacher was that he was a very patient gentleman; even though he would stress the
fact that I have to practice constantly, he would still avail himself for anything concerning the
development of my skill.

So from my experience I think a piano teacher has to be patient and flexible, be able to
accommodate different abilities and learning styles. They should also be versatile in styles/genres
they can play.

He/she has to be exceptionally accomplished, experienced and able to demonstrate the

techniques that are required (They must be inspiring too!)

The piano teacher should also be a person that the student can look up to (a role model) in terms
of performance ability and as a human being.

They should also have the capacity to encourage and mentor a student. And the capability to show
dedication and commitment to the craft and the teaching of the craft (set the example of diligence
with personal practice and maintaining a good level of performance ability).

They must be punctual, be empathetic, kind and generous. You should also know “When” and
“How” to set boundaries and also to be firm.

NB: NEVER LOSE YOUR TEMPER, ALWAYS BE FAIR !!!

Share the joy of music making !! Share your excitement in music and also in
celebration/acknowledgement of the student’s achievements, the incremental and big moments
(concerts and exams).

Keep a balance of “FUN” and “SERIOUSNESS” when teaching; and never stop learning. Allow
yourself the privilege to learn from your students.
