A backgrounder on Sukanya Lalwani and Reuben Kumar Lalwani – Prospective parents for

adopting a girl child

We have been married 7 years. Both are professionally trained and are engaged in their own
individual lines of work.

Sukanya is a trained hair stylist owning and managing a salon which has been functioning for
11 years. She has worked hard to build up the business and has greatly succeeded having a
loyal and consistent customer base. Her salon enjoys a very good reputation with both her
customers and her suppliers. She has written articles in magazines of repute on her subject
and area of expertise.

Reuben is an Assistant Project Officer with the United Nations Children’s Fund and has been
with them from 1986 onwards. He has worked his way up to his present position. His area of
expertise is Finance and Programme budgets and accounts. He is currently supporting the
following programmes – Reproductive Child Health, HIV/AIDS, Advocacy & Partnerships
and in addition is the designated UNICEF Programme software first line user for the entire
office. Working with UNICEF is a privilege and an unique experience as he has spent a long
time also working at the grass roots level with children which are its main beneficiaries.

Collectively both contribute to the household income which is around Rs. 120,000.00 per
month.

Having reached a position in their lives where they are comfortable, both feel it is time to
adopt a child and offer a safe and congenial atmosphere for the growth and development of a
disadvantaged and deprived child. They especially want to adopt a girl child, in view of the
pitiable state of girl children in certain quarters of the country.

Both feel strongly about this step and have discussed it at length. Both are undivided in their
thinking about this move.
