Class Exercise - Practical Chemistry

1. A is a solution of KmnO4 of unknown concentration. B is a solution of 0.025 moles per

dm3 ethanedioic acid, while solution C is 2.0 moles per dm3 solutoin of H2SO4. When
25.0cm3 portions solution B acidified by 10.0cm3 of solution C were titrated against
solutoin A, an average volume of 19.3cm 3 of solution A was required for complete
oxidation. From the above data, calculate the concentration of KMnO4 in solution A in
(i) moles per dm3
(ii) grams per dm3 (KmnO4 = 158)

2. Complete the table below : C, D and E are unknown salts.

s/n Test Observation Inference

I C + distilled water The salt dissolves

ii C solution + HNO3(aq) + AgNO3(aq) Cl- present

iii C solution + HNO3(aq) + AgNO3(aq)

+ NH3(aq)

iv D + BaCl2(aq) + HCl(aq) A white precipitate

was obtained.

+ Excess HCl(aq) SO42- present
