GENERAL DETAILS
Movie Name : TEACHERS’ JOURNEY

Director : DEEPAK VERMA

Genre : DOCUMENTARY

Duration : 18 MINUTES 03 SECONDS

INTRODUCTION
It is a short documentary film by Deepak Verma. It depicts the various
teaching techniques and practices of a teacher named ‘Mukesh
Malviya’. This film narrates the ideal reflective practices of a teacher
about how he performs multiple roles in his life, he narrates his
experience and experiment on different methods to provide learning
opportunities to students. Textbook teaching was not promoted in the
film. Students were made to collect plastic, iron, wood, etc from the
surroundings so that they could learn to identify them. Teacher
(Mukesh) said that it was easier for him and the school to function
better without the burden of textbook driven teaching. The activities
depicted in the film – making graphs, counting, making horizontal and
vertical lines, counting and recognizing family members, classification
of different materials – were not content driven or according to any
textbook. Each of the activities and information collected was taken
from within the locality. The students of Education Department learnt
useful inputs on how a committed teacher can make best use of local
resources and excel irrespective of circumstances.
This film is clearly made academic institutions and education
practitioners as the audiences. This film is way abode what one usually
finds in the educational channels of the television, where these
channels glorifies the existing poverty of our classroom practices.

This film forces us to rethink - how a school teacher survived beyond

the poverty of classroom and the regimes of textbooks. Through the
film, the director expect that film gain presence in higher education and
inspired student teachers to begin their own journey into the
profession.

Summary
This film narrates how a teacher - Mukesh Malviya learned through his
practice as an ideal practitionale this as an film in some way is a
documentary and reportage of his experience. The multiple roles of this
teacher lives experiments and narrates to us are that of guide and
Judge in the classroom for children on the hand; and on the other as a
social person within the milieu central India and of a tribal hamlet in
India. And probably to the state he is merely someone at the lowest
range of a beaurocratic education of system.

The beaurocratic education system does keep him responsive not to

the children or to the community but to the system itself where
expected to cater to every survey in every censes.

The multigrade in which he functions as a single teacher lives for

children of class 1-5 was that of chaos. The teacher overcomes the seen
ario and finds a solution. He observed children have been learning from
each other since there are fewer classrooms for them to be separated;
they learned and taught each other.

Reflection
Personally to me the process of disciplining in classroom and discussion
on physical punishment remains the most ambivalent section in the
film. On the one hand it assaults the teacher’s determination to avoid
physical punishment and process of shaming.

Teacher democratically persuades the fellow classmates to accept that

"murga hanasiese seekhte nahin hain" and hence convince them to
consider the victim, all in the classroom. Where wellness to the beating
were also asked their opinion as if and how the accused needs to be
punished. But in that process which went on for about five to ten
-minutes the offender definitely underwent the process of shaming.

In the movie a school is there in Madhya Pradesh where a single

teacher is there and all student sit together in a class, through this
movie we can analyze how a teacher deals with different situation in
lack of facilitates and even there is no hope of getting things better.
Inspill of this harsh situation a teacher needs to be capable enough to
tackle the conflicts of student and discriminations. A teacher should
know the art of making the deficit condition as strength and deal with
the present condition.

Conclusion and Suggestion

Mukesh respects the skills of the child and Values them - he says since
he was aware that children would drive bullock carts and collected
tendu patta, it is unassuming of the state system to consider / treat
them as child.

Hence when schooling happens it is essential to treat their knowledge

and lived experiences as Valuable and integrates into classroom. While
treating them as child often the state system and the textbooks making
learning to be over simplified. The teacher wants to overthrown.
Teacher says that it is not possible for him to assure everything about
the future of these children but for the fact that they will have the
confidence to stand for what they believe.
Educational Implication
This short documentary film gives us so many things to learn which are
very much relevant in today's teaching training process. This movie
entails an ideal role of teachers, and the various aspects associated
with them.

 In lack of facilities also, a motivated teacher do his duties and

impart knowledge rather blaming the situations.

 A teacher should not focus on more bookish knowledge but

strengthen the students with the experiences and enable them to
survive and deal with problems in life.

 As we have seen in the film that how the environment is acting as

the barrier in the educational process of those children So, we will
should make efforts produces a conducive environment
educational process.

 The structural part of education needs an urgent attention from

us. As they are still some parts is India where there is a broken
education system.
