Individual Factors and Internship Satisfaction of Hotel Management Graduates

Abstract
Internship in area of hotel management course are important part of any academic curriculum as it
provides students with the knowledge related to the practical aspects in a supervised form. Various reputed
brand hotels recruit trainees to train them from their organization. Internship for the hotel management
students acts as a bridge where the students can transfer their knowledge gained from the classes into the
practical aspect by the form of experimental learning. Industrial training is beneficial for both the students
as well as hotel as it helps student to gain practical knowledge and simultaneously help hotel to identify the
prospective employees .Various factors contribute to the success of industrial training program out of which
the individual factor is one of the crucial key area, various individual factors such as Self initiative ,Right
attitude along with Academic knowledge are very essential for the successful completion of the industrial
training program.
Further to examine the role of these factors 12 structured question were asked to the 100 respondent who
have completed their industrial training from various reputed brand hotels ,findings of the survey was
analysed using likert 5 point scale.
The results of the study would be very useful for the Institutes, Hotels and the students who would be
pursuing their internship.

INTRODUCTION
Internship is defined as essential form of learning in which industrial trainees get the benefit of supervised
learning experience in order to excel their practical knowledge in a specified area ( Patton&Dial,1988) .Some
of the most prominent features of the industrial training program include four features (a) Defined Working
Hours (b) work of the industrial trainee can be paid or unpaid (c) Entire process of industrial training is
evaluated in the form of credit in academic curriculum (d) The process of industrial training is monitored by
the nominated supervisor of the institute or university who coordinates with the students as well as the
organizations Industry training is essential because of the fact that training can reveal students to the actual
functioning environment. It also help to add and enlarge technical knowledge and practical skills of the
student, if the student has formerly gained knowledge is limited, but when students joins this training,
students can find out more about things, and when something will work. In addition, students can learn about
the latest technology or skills in Training Industry. The actual practical work experience is very necessary
along with the classroom learning as it help in overall acquisition of essential traits in the higher education (
Kuh,2008) .Industrial training in the curriculum of the students acts a a bridge for the classroom learning
where the students can acquire professional practice( Baired ,1996).Wen (2010) in his work studied various
characteristics of the students which results in the successful competition of the industrial training program
with the different organization. Various factors related to individual contribute to the successful competition
of the industrial training- factors such as Self initiative, right attitude along with academic preparedness of
the students are instrumental in the successful competition of the industrial training program. Furthermore the
trainees who are having the basic knowledge about their field and their technical area. The personal qualities
of the individual have a great impact on the performance of the individual during the tenure of training may
have good amount of result in the performance of the individual qualities such as positive attitude, right
approach and accountability towards their works shows the positive results regarding the industrial training
satisfaction. Training is one of the important function of human resource department which has huge amount
of benefit for the individual and the organization, training of individual enhance the knowledge and expertise
of the individual which helps in enhancing the performance of the organization in the form of enhanced
productivity with regard to both quality and quantity, a individual who is trained from the reputed

organization are always considered for the employment too. An individual who is trained properly has a self
confidence in his task related to the work as the individual knows about the standard operating procedure
which enables him to pursue the task given to him in a most efficient and a effective way, during the rush
hours of the operation such individuals require lesser amount of supervision ,a well trained individual can
make best use of the available resources which helps the organization to run economically .Hotel
organization also works on the principle of standard costing, standard food cost id one of the important
domain of hotels and all the employees are instructed to ensure standard food cost in order to avoid pilferages
and wastages and to maximise the profit earn from day to day operation .During the tenure of internship
training trainee are taught these standard operating procedure which is helpful for the students once they start
employment with the reputed hotel organization, training helps the trainee in various ways they can acquire
adequate amount of knowledge and skills which provide confidence to the employee a way once trainee
follows the standard operating procedure it reduces the chance of accidents and the damages to the
equipments used in hotels which is beneficial hotel economically These Standard operating procedure require
great amount of involvement and practice from the individuals.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Hospitality Internship has a huge bunch to serve to the students who are pursuing their academic studies in
various disciplines. During the tenure of training process, they get an opportunity to work with the leading
organizations and get a chance to explore more knowledge in their relevant field. Industrial training can be
stated as a process in which individual gains supervised practical experience and knowledge in the specified
area or domain According to (Mccleland 2002) training is referred to as an activity which changes the
behaviour of an individual working in the organization .It can also be stated as a process which provide
individuals with the knowledge and the skills which are required for operation which are set by the
management (Sommerville, 2007).
 Chand & Desmukh ( 2019)- authors in their work stated that online platform for the students pursing
industrial training should be made in which they can share their learning along with problems associated
to various task of industrial training can be shared every students .Students would be working with
different organization this platform would assist students identifying the problems related to different
task along with the best possible solution earlier models of industrial training is only focussed to
practical learning on the other hand this model would be realistic model which would help students to be
a better professional.
 Yi-An Hou (2018)- author study stated that industrial training acts as a link between the academic
learning and the industrial practices due to the fact that students would come to know about various
concept which they would have not studies in their academic tenure and the success of the industrial
training depends on the partnership of institutes ,students and industry, moreover if the students are not
satisfied with their industrial training it would lead to the dishearten students and students would turn
away from the industry and look for other career options.
 Hui Zhang et al. ( 2017) - authors studied various factors which helps students in making the choice
regarding to choose hospitality industry as a career choice, these factors were regarded as the
motivational factors and included proper salaries wages along with the availability of fridge benefits for
the students who are willing to work in the hospitality industry.
 Yadav ( 2016 )- authors in their work studied the concept of training with reference to creativity,
morale and employee retention, authors have then given a relationship between these three variables and
has suggested that the training has positive relation between the creativity of the employee and the
morale of the employee undergoing the training .Organization today have huge amount of budget
allocated to the training and development but the success of this approach depends on the involvement
of individual who could create an environment which would support the process of learning trough
training.
 Rajeshree & Hemraj (2015)-The authors stated that the many students of hospitality management
courses post competition of their industrial training think for other career option because of the fact that
they lack in their learning during the course of industrial training . Some students post completion of the
course are happy to work with the industry as these students are properly trained during the tenure of

industrial training while some students look for other career option post competition of their industrial
training .
 Anoop Kumar et al. (2014)-This authors study stated that students find favourable working
environment in the industry during the tenure of industrial training moreover the task allotted to them
are also not respectable as compared to the other sectors. The concept of challenges and innovation are
missing during the tenure of industrial training of the hospitality management students, prolonged
routine task provides negative feedback to the students towards career opportunities presented by the
industry for career advancement.
 Saad and Mat ( 2014)- stated in their study that training is one of the important area of human resource
management which uses various methods to enhance the knowledge and skills of various individual
working in the organization for which different methods are adopted by this department so that the
knowledge and skills of individuals are enhanced so that better learning may be provided to the
individuals, the learning received from various training are helpful in performing various task done by
the individual in a effective way which helps the organization to achieve their goals. Training acts as a
catalyst that acts as an influential tool which helps to bring the expansion of the organization and also
assists the individual in the expansion of various capabilities which are required to do the task in the
organization.
 Ozerbas (2014)- author has stated in his work that vocational and technical has training as an important
part of the studies and training helps the students for balanced development of trainees in various
domains such as social, emotional and intellectual, trainees are exposed to different areas of operation
where they used to face the real work environment which helps trainees to develop all these skills
.author also stated that with the training trainees are benefitted with the gain of knowledge ,technical
skills and various professional practices required by the industry.
 Xi (2012)- author in his work conducted the qualitative research to understand the satisfaction of the
graduate students towards the training provided by the universities in Thailand .Author have conducted
study on the students of five major University of Thailand .the result of author study stated that majorly
students were satisfied by the various skills provided by the universities of Thailand .Graduates also
articulated that the tenure of training program should be increased to enhance their practical skills
.Graduates also stated that the training program was helpful in enhancing their practical skills related to
the trade and has act beneficial along with the academic knowledge learned from the classes .the study
of author also suggested that training tenure of the students should be increased so that students can gain
more practical knowledge
 Schwartz (2010)- Author identified training as a two way process in which both professional and
students are equally important for successful completion of training. The strengths and weakness of both
professional and students should be known so that the training tenure can be made successful, industrial
training.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A. Research Design
Industrial training is an important domain of academic curriculum for the hotel management students across
the globe, students tends to enhance their practical skills and implement their theoretical knowledge during
the tenure of industrial training , hence this area is a very crucial area in order to enhance the practical skills
of the students, different students have different learning abilities and these abilities depends on various
individual factors such as their academic knowledge, right attitude towards work and the self confidence of
the students .Very less amount of research has been done to study and identify the factors of individual which
determine the industrial training satisfaction of the students of hotel management .
The research paper uses the quantitative method to study the relationship between the individual factors and
industrial training satisfaction of the hotel management graduates the study would include determining the
relationship between these factors and industrial training satisfaction using the independent variable
individual factor and its relationship between the dependent variable industrial training satisfaction . The aim
of the research paper is to identify of relationship between these variables .Detailed discussion and
suggestion will be are shared with regard to findings.

B. Research Objectives
a) To Study the role of between individual factors and internship satisfaction of Hospitality graduates.
b) To identify various individual factors and their role in internship satisfaction of Hospitality graduates.
C. Hypotheses for research
Based on the research questions following hypothesis are being formulated:-
H1 – Does relationship exist between individual factors and internship satisfaction of hospitality students?
H2 – Are there various individual factors which determine internship satisfaction of hospitality students
D. Sampling
A widespread review of literature was done referring various studies related to the research context and
quantitative study was ensured on the basis of questionnaire circulated to the respondents. Entire work was
focussed on finding the relationship between the role of individual factor and internship satisfaction of the
hospitality students and determining various individual factors which assist students for determining the
internship satisfaction of hospitality students. Questionnaire was circulated to the 100 students of hospitality
courses.
E. Data Collection
Both primary and secondary sources of data used for the purpose of research
Primary data
Primary data for the research paper was gathered from hospitality students of Dehradun Information was
collected in the shape of questionnaire which was collected from the students who have successfully
concluded their internship training from various reputed hotel brands for which 12 well framed question were
asked to the students focussing on role of individual factors on their internship satisfaction along with various
personal details of the students.
Secondary data
Secondary data used for the research paper comprised of various research including eminent research paper
of reputed journal, articles and other renowned publication.
F. Data Analysis Tools
This research paper consisted of 12 question asked from the respondent which was calculated on Likert 5
point scale ranging response 1-Strongly Disagree 2- Disagree 3- Neutral 4 Agree 5- strongly Agree, The
question were focused on determining the role of individual factors in internship satisfaction of hospitality
students .
DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
Well framed closed ended questionnaires were suitably filled by the 100 respondents. The data reflected by
the questionnaire are depicted in the diagrams.

Conclusion
The Purpose of the research paper was to examine the relationship among the independent variable individual
factor with the dependent variable internship satisfaction of the hotel management undergraduates. The paper
also focussed on the various individual factors contributing to the internship satisfaction of the hospitality
undergraduates factors such as Self initiative, right attitude of the trainees and the academic knowledge of
industrial trainee was studied with regard to the internship satisfaction of the students of hospitality domain
and its effect on internship satisfaction. .
According to H1: The Findings of research paper stated that there is appositive relationship between the
individual factors and internship satisfaction of the hospitality undergraduates, according to the findings of
the research paper internship satisfaction of the students is related to individual factors .Internship
satisfaction of students vary from students to students with regards to their individual qualities and their
ability to adapt in the new working environment, observation of students and their interest in the particular
area directly affect the internship satisfaction of the students .Larger hotel establishments have well defined
standard operating procedures for conducting various task in the hotels, students having positive attitude and
interest can easily understand these standard operating procedure which results in improved internship
satisfaction of the students.

According to H2: The result of the research paper study also stated that there are various individual factors
which affect the internship satisfaction of the hospitality undergraduates factors such as the academic
knowledge of the students which they have attain in their academic tenure along with right attitude plays a
vital role in developing the interest in the internship of the hospitality undergraduate, students who are self
driven and have initiated for various task in the hotel operation also have resulted in positive internship
satisfaction during the tenure of internship.

SUGGESTIONS
The Study of the research paper suggested that internship satisfaction of the hospitality undergraduates
depends on the individual factors. Different trainees with different academic background would vary in their
internship satisfaction. Apart from this positive attitude of the trainee along with his involvement in taking
initiative in various operation of hotels results in better satisfaction of the trainees .
Research paper study also revealed that fixed working hours for the trainees should be formulated along with
proper roaster so that trainees so that the trainees are not overburden with their work and can enjoy the real
work environment of the hotel, also the trainees should be given fair stipend during the course of their
internship so that trainees and hotels can value the contribution of the trainees for the organization
