Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

The Lord was the creator of good teachers. It was His sixth day of 'overtime' and He knew that this was a
tremendous responsibility for teachers who would touch the lives of so many impressionable young children.
An angel appeared to Him and said, "You are taking a long time to figure this one out" "Yes," said the Lord,"
but have you read the specs on this order?”
TEACHER: Teacher must stand above all students to be at their level. He must be able to do 180 additional
things which are not related to their taught subject. Teacher must have to run on coffee. He must be able to
communicate as per his vital knowledge to all students daily. Teacher must have more time for others than
for herself/himself "Six pairs of hands," said the angel, "that's impossible!" "Well," said the Lord, "it is not the
hands that are the problem. It is the three pairs of eyes that are presenting the most difficulty!" The angel
looked incredulous, "Three pairs of eyes....on a standard model?"
The Lord nodded His head, “one pair is to see whether a student for what he is and not what others have
labelled him as. The Second pair is the pair of eyes which is at the back of the teacher's head to watch what
should not be seen, but what must to be known. The eyes in the front are only to look at the child as he/she
'acts out' in order to reflect.
"Lord," said the angel, "this is a very large project and I think You should work on it tomorrow."
"I can't," said the Lord, "for I have come very close to creating something much like Myself. I have one that
comes to work when he/she is sick teaches a class of children that do not want to learn has a special place in
his/her heart for children who are not his/her own understands the struggles of those who have difficulty
never takes the students for
granted."
The angel looked closely at the model the Lord was creating, "It is too soft-hearted," said the angel. "Yes,"
said the Lord, "but also tough, you cannot imagine what this teacher can endure or do, if necessary."
"Can this teacher think?" asked the angel.
"Not only think," said the Lord, "but reason and compromise."
The angel came closer to have a better look at the model and ran his finger over the teacher's cheek.
"Well, Lord," said the angel, your job looks fine but there is a leak I told you that you were putting too much
into this model. You cannot imagine the stress that will be placed upon the teacher."
The Lord moved in closer and lifted the drop of moisture from the teacher's cheek. It shone and glistened in
the light.
"It is not a leak,- He said, "It is a tear."
"A tear? What is that?" asked the angel, "What is a tear for?"
The Lord replied with great thought, "For the joy and pride watching a child accomplishes even it's the
smallest task to do. It is done for the loneliness of children who have a hard time to fit in it to compassionate
feelings of their parents. This has been done when a teacher had to leave the class and to say good bye to his
students and get ready to welcome
a new class."
"My, "said the angel," The tear thing is a great idea...You are a genius!!"
The Lord looked sombre, "I didn't put it there."

Abhishekh Gulati
C/45, Metro Society
Jail Road
Cuttack, Odisha 753002

5th July, 2019

The Secretary
Metro Society
Cuttack

Dear Sir.

With due respect, I, John Brown, residing in C/45 would like to request you to allot a separate space for
parking cars as we children are not allowed to play in the compound anymore.
Since the number of cars has increased in the past year, children are left with no space to play. In fact, many
car owners ask us to go to the playground which is far away from our society. The playground is at least 15
minutes away from our homes and our parents wouldn't allow us to play there beyond 6 0'clock in the
evening. We go for our classes after school and return only at 6, which means children will not be able to play
at all.
I am aware that a vacant plot is available in our society's south end. If this could be allotted for parking,
children could continue playing downstairs where their parents can keep a watch on them.
Your understanding in this regard Will be greatly appreciated. I look forward to your reply.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,
John Brown

Question 4

There came to our town some years ago a showman who owned an institution called the Gaiety Land.
Overnight, our Gymkhana wounds became resplendent with banners and streamers and coloured lamps.
From all over the district, crowds poured into the show. Within a week of opening, in gate money, they
collected five hundred rupees a day, Gaiety Land provided us with all sorts of fun and gambling and side-
shows. For a couple of annas, in each booth, we could watch anything from performing parrots to crack
motor cyclists. In addition to this, there were lotteries and shooting galleries. where, for an anna, you always
stood a chance of winning a hundred rupees. There was a particular corner of the show which was in great
favour. Here, for a ticket costing eight annas, you could be lucky enough to acquire a variety of articles --- pin
cushions, sewing machines or even a road engine. One evening, they drew a ticket number 1005, and I
happened to own the other half of the ticket. Glancing down the list or articles, they declared that I had
become the owner of a road engine! I looked stunned. People gathered around and gazed at me as if I were
some sort of a curious animal. Some
people muttered and giggled, "Fancy anyone becoming the owner of a road engine!" It was not the sort of
prize one could carry home at short notice. I asked the showman if he could help me to transport it. He
merely pointed at a notice which decreed that all the winners should remove their prizes immediately after
the draw and by their own effort. However, they had to make an exception in my case. They agreed to keep
the engine at the Gymkhana Grounds till the end of the season, and then. I would have to make my own
arrangements to take it out. When I asked the showman if he could find me a driver, he just smiled and said,
"The fellow who brought it here had to be paid a hundred rupees for the job and five rupees a day. I sent him
away and made up my mind that if no one was going to draw it. I would just leave it to its fate." "Can't I sell it
to some municipality?" I asked innocently. He burst into a laugh. "As a showman I have enough trouble with
municipal people. I would rather keep out of the way." My friends and relatives poured in, to congratulate
me on my latest acquisition. No one knew precisely how much a road engine would fetch; all the same they
felt that there was a lot of money in it. "Even if you sell it as scrap iron, you can make a few thousands," some
of my friends declared. Every day I made a trip to the Gymkhana Grounds to have a look at my engine. I grew
very fond of it. I loved
its shining brass parts. I stood near it and patted it affectionately, hovered about it. and returned home
everyday only at
the close of the show. I thought all my troubles were coming to an end. How ignorant I was!
How little did I guess that my troubles had just begun!

Dear Sir,
My name is Diganta Choudhury, and I am a resident of Puri. I regularly visit the Konark temple. However, I
have been noticing that the ancient temple is at risk because of some insensitive visitors lately.
Some local boys have been visiting the temple recently and fooling around the temple premises. They have
been writing their names on the intricately carved interiors of the temple. I have also seen them scribbling on
the exterior walls of the temple in a way that the CCTV cannot capture any footage. If officers dressed in civil
clothes are employed within the temple premises, such acts can be tracked and prevented.
Your understanding in this regard will be greatly appreciated. I look forward to your reply.

Thanking you,

QUESTION 4:-

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that
follow:

Unlike most sea expeditions undertaken in the tropics, our

expedition to round Island was an unqualified success: that is if you
overlook the fact that Wahab was seasick, Dave suffered from heat
stroke, and I attempted to gain an Olympic Gold Medal for the longest,
most painful elbow side attempted to date on the island.

Getting up at four in the morning in a strange hotel is always

sobering, especially when you suspect, form bitter experiences in
other parts of the world, that you are the only member of the
expedition who is being stupid enough to be on time, or, may be, to
appear at all. I always have a guilt complex when I get up too early in
a hotel, and feel it incumbent upon me to creep about so as to avoid
disturbing my less eccentric fellow guests. However, blundering about
in unfamiliar territory is fraught with difficulties. On the occasion,
these started with trying to find the light switch and knocking over the
bedside table with its decoration of a large water jug, glass, clock, and
three pamphlets on the fauna of Round Island. Next came the crashing
descent of the lavatory seat(like a cannonade being fired across the
bows of every sleeper in the place) to be followed by a rattle as of
musketry as the water pipes cleared their throats, merging into a roar
of the shower which, at the hour, sounded like the cataclysmic
eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. The only pleasure I derived from this
whole dreary performance was the thought that I was waking my
companions, who should have been up already.

a) Give the meaning of the following words as used in the passage.

One-word answers or short phrases will be accepted:
i. Incumbent
ii. Blundering
iii. Cannonade

b) Answer the following questions briefly in you own words:

i. Was this expedition to Round Island really an unqualified
success? Give reasons.
ii. Why does the author consider his fellow guests less
eccentric?
iii. Mention briefly two of the difficulties the author
encountered?
iv. What is the ‘cataclysmic eruption’ referred to?
v. What is compared to a ‘cannonade being fired’?
c) In not more than 50 words of your own, describe why the narrator
suffered from a guilt complex.

QUESTION 4 SOLUTIONS:-

a)

i. To be one’s duty
ii. Moving about clumsily
iii. Continuous firing from cannons or big guns.

b)

i. No. Wahab was suffering from seasickness, Dave has

succumbed to heat stroke and the narrator had fallen
and injured himself.
ii. He is the only one who gets up early in the morning
and tries to be ready on time whereas the others are
sleeping peacefully unconcerned about being late.
Some do not make an appearance at all.
iii. While trying to find the light switch, he upset the
bedside table with a large water jug, glass, clock and
three pamphlets. Secondly, when he stumbled into the
bathroom, the lavatory seat came crashing down with
a loud sound.
iv. The sound of the shower combined with the water
gurgling down the water pipes sounded like a
cataclysmic eruption of a volcano.
v. The sound of the lavatory seat when it came crashing
down is compared to a cannonade being fired.

c) Narrator gets up at 4o’clock- everybody else is sleeping-knows

it is stupid of him-others unconcerned about punctuality-while
finding light switch upsets side table in bathroom- lavatory seat
crashes down- sound of shower very loud- feels pleasure for
disturbing sleepers.
