II. Objective : Uses divisibility rules for 4 and 8 to find the common factors of numbers.
III. Materials : Activity sheets
Mathematical Ideas:

DIVISIBILTY RULES
When is a number divisible by 4?
The number formed by the last two digits is divisible by 4 or the last
two digits are zeros
Example: 132 32 ÷ 4 = 8
5 248 48 ÷ 4 = 12
3 400 00

When is a number divisible by 8?

The number formed by the last three digits is divisible by 8 or the
last three digits are zeros.
Example: 1 248 248 ÷ 8 = 31
5 664 664 ÷ 8 = 83

IV. Presentation:
Josefina has 120 guavas. She wants to share them equally among her friends. Will she
be able to share these equally among her 4 friends? 8 friends? How many rows of 3 are
there?
To find the answer, let us divide 120 by each of these numbers. (4 and 8)
120 ÷ 4 = 30
120 ÷ 8 = 15
Based from your answers, which numbers among 4 and 8can divide 120 with zero
remainder?
120 is divisible by 4 because the last 2 digits which is 20 is divisible by 4.
It is also divisible by 8. The three digits form a number that is divisible by 8.
NOTE: When a number is divided by a second number and the remainder is zero, then the
first number is said to be divisible by the second number. The second number is called a
divisor or a factor of the first number.

DIVISIBILTY RULES
When is a number divisible by 11?
 Divisible by 11:if the sum of the digits in the odd places and the sum of the digits in the
even places are equal or their difference is a multiple of 11.
Examples:
5 467 5 + 6 = 11 4 + 7 = 11 11 = 11
484 4+ 4 = 8 8 8 = 8

When is a number divisible by 12?

 Divisible by 12: if the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 2 and 3
Examples:
372= 3+7+2 = 12, 12 is divisible by 2 and 3, therefore 372 is divisible by 12
