OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS The family arrives at the airport in Paris, France. Ithas been a long time since the triplets have seen their Uncle Jack. Their mother is excited to see her brother, foo. She says, “Larry, Lucy, and Leon, your Uncle Jack said he'll meet us here.” “'m so happy to see Uncle Jack!” say Leon and Lucy. “And Paris, too!” says Larry. Lucy asks, “How long has it been since we were here?” “It has been two years,” says Leon. de Gaulle Airport Charles “Here comes Uncle Jack,” says their mom. “Hey, kids! Hey, Lorraine! Welcome to Paris! | hope everyone is hungry!” Uncle Jack puts their luggage into the car. The sky looks alittle dark, and it looks like it will probably rain. “Uncle Jack, we really want to see your restaurant!” says Lucy. “And Paris!” says Larry. “Bul, it looks like it’s going to rain,” says Leon. “Well, it's a good thing the restaurant is inside,” Uncle Jack says with a smile. —— p< 4 ireck) “Iwo years is a long time without French food,” says their mother, who is smiling. The weather is very cloudy, and it still looks like it will rain. “Uncle Jack, I'm ready for dinner!” says Lucy. “I'm really hungry, too,” says L “We haven't eaten since 10:30 in the morning,” says Leon. “And that was in Chicago!” says Lucy. They arrive at the restaurant, and Uncle Jack takes them inside. "This is a nice place, Jack,” says Lorraine. “Yeah,” says Leon, “we think it's beautiful!” “Thank you! | hope everyone enjoys the food, too,” says Uncle Jack. Lorraine and the triplets laugh. “Uncle Jack,” says Lucy, “your food is always delicious!” The brings them to a table. Everyone sits down. The hostess gives menus to everyone. Then the comes to the table. “Are you ready to order?” he asks. The triplets don't look at the menus, but say, “Yes, we are!” “Ill have a piece of lemon cake,” says Leon. Lucy says, “A chocolate croissant, please.” “And cookies and ice cream for me!” Larry says. “Those are delicious pastries and desserts, but do you want dinner?” he asks. “Bring everyone the special, please,” says Uncle Jack. “OK,” says the waiter. — Zz — ra C => rs SS ie _ “What's your name?” asks Larry. “My name is Pierre,” says the waiter. “How long have you been working here?” asks Leon. “Well,” says Pierre, “| have been working here for two months.” “That's great!” says Leon. “How long have you been in Paris?” The waiter asks the triplets. “Since this afternoon,” says Larry. “| hope you enjoy your visit and your dinner,” says the waiter. “Thank you!" the triplets say. The waiter brings all the food to the table. “Everything smells wonderful!” says Lorraine. “tt will taste delicious, too,” says Jack. “After we finish eating, we can go sightseeing!” After they eat, they walk to the front door. Everyone is disappointed. It has started to rain. “Now, we won't be able to go sightseeing in Paris!” Lucy says. “Not today, but we can go tomorrow,” says Uncle Jack. The family arrives at their uncle’s house. Everyone takes their suitcases upstairs. The triplets play a game and then go to bed. The next day, it's sunny outside. Lucy is the first to wake up and looks out the window. “Larry! Leon! Wake up!” she says. “The weather is so nice!” “Wow!” Larry says, “Now we can see the Eiffel Tower!” “We can see everything in Paris!” says Lucy. “Hurry! We have a lot of places to visit,” Leon says. “Kids,” Uncle Jack yells, “are you almost ready to go?” “One more minute!” Lucy says. She takes her camera. They run downstairs and get into the car. The family is excited because they're going to begin their vacation. First, they're going to visit the Seine River. “| have to go to the restaurant,” says Uncle Jack. “See you in two hours!” Lorraine has circled popular places on a map. She gives it to the triplets. Paris is very beautiful, and the kids are excited and amazed. There are a lot of interesting artists, too. They forget about sightseeing for a minute. “Mom, it's so beautiful here! Look at all the paintings!” says Larry. Their mom didn’t answer. Lucy asks, “Where did Mom go?” “She was right here!” says Leon. “| see her,” says Larry. “She's behind the artist with the huge paintings.” The kids run over. “Mom, we thought you were lost!” Lucy says. “Wow! Your paintings are amazing!” says Lucy. “Thank you,” says the artist. “Is that the Eiffel Tower?” asks Larry. “Yes, it is!" the artist says. The triplets are interested and ask more questions. “How long have you been painting?” asks Lucy. “lve been painting since | was five years old,” says the artist. “How long have you lived in Paris?” asks Leon. “Ive lived in Paris for 20 years,” says the artist. Soon, their mother arrives and asks, “Kids, are you ready?” “No!” they say. “We haven't seen anything,” says Leon. “We only saw Paris in this painting,” says Larry. “Look, Mom,” says Lucy. You can see everything!” “Here,” says the artist, “please take it.
