WCDMA RAN
Adaptive RACH Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

2.1 Introduction
When a large number of UEs simultaneously initiate a random access procedure in a cell, the
received total wideband power (RTWP) of this cell becomes extremely high. To reduce the
RTWP in this scenario, Huawei offers Adaptive RACH. Adaptive RACH enables the RNC to
dynamically adjust the settings of random access parameters for a cell based on the uplink
power load and number of acknowledged random accesses in a specified period of time. This
feature can reduce a cell's RTWP and increase its capacity.

2.2 Benefits
When the RTWP of a cell is high due to a large number of random accesses, Adaptive RACH
helps reduce the RTWP by 0.3 dB to 0.5 dB, or increase the HSUPA throughput by about 5%.

WCDMA RAN
Adaptive RACH Feature Parameter Description 3 Technical Description

3 Technical Description

When the RTWP of a cell is high due to a large number of random accesses, Adaptive RACH
enables the RNC to dynamically adjust the settings of random access parameters based on the
uplink power load and number of acknowledged random accesses. The RNC broadcasts the
new settings of random access parameters to UEs. The random access parameters include the
constant for calculating the initial transmit power, ramping step for random access preambles,
and maximum number of preamble retransmissions.

The RNC measures the number of acknowledged random accesses in a cell when the
ACK_PRACH_PREAM_MEAS option under the NBMLdcAlgoSwitch (BSC6900,
BSC6910) parameter in the ADD UCELLALGOSWITCH command is selected.

Adaptive RACH is activated when the ADAPTIVE_RACH and

ACK_PRACH_PREAM_MEAS options under the NBMLdcAlgoSwitch (BSC6900,
BSC6910) parameter in the ADD UCELLALGOSWITCH command are selected.

This feature works in three states, as shown in Figure 3-1.

l Started: Cells meet optimization triggering conditions. Optimization is triggered when

the following conditions are met: The uplink power load of a cell is greater than or equal
to the value of the OptiStartLoadState (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter and the number
of acknowledged random accesses is greater than or equal to the value of the
RandomAccessCongestThd (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter.
l Unstarted: Optimization is stopped when the number of acknowledged random accesses
in a cell is less than or equal to the value of the RandomAccessClearThd (BSC6900,
BSC6910) parameter for a period greater than the value specified by the OptiStopHyst
(BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter.
l Waiting for stop: A cell enters this state when the number of acknowledged random
accesses in a cell is less than or equal to the value of the RandomAccessClearThd
(BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter for a period less than the value specified by the
OptiStopHyst (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter.
NOTE

The Cell adaptive RACH state parameter can be queried by running the DSP UCELLCHK command.
The value is Started, Unstarted, or Waiting for stop.
The uplink power load status is determined by the uplink power load and the values of DlNormalThd
(BSC6900, BSC6910), DlLoadedThd (BSC6900, BSC6910), DlHeavyThd (BSC6900, BSC6910), and
DlOverloadThd (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameters in the ADD UCELLLDM command.

WCDMA RAN
Adaptive RACH Feature Parameter Description 3 Technical Description

Figure 3-1 Working states of Adaptive RACH

The RNC dynamically adjusts the settings of the random access parameters as follows:
l In Started and Waiting for stop states, the RNC broadcasts random access parameters to
the UE. The parameters include OptiConstantvalue (BSC6900, BSC6910),
OptiPowerRampStep (BSC6900, BSC6910), and OptiPreambleRetransMax (BSC6900,
BSC6910).
l In Unstarted state, the RNC broadcasts random access baseline parameters to the UE.
The parameters include Constantvalue (BSC6900, BSC6910), PowerRampStep
(BSC6900, BSC6910), and PreambleRetransMax (BSC6900, BSC6910).
Compared with the original settings, the optimized settings reduce the value of the constant
for calculating the initial transmit power, lower the ramping step for random access
preambles, and increase the maximum number of preamble retransmissions. Therefore, using
the optimized settings reduces the interference to uplink channels and ultimately reduces the
cell RTWP when the cell uplink load is greater than the value of the OptiStartLoadState
parameter and the number of acknowledged random accesses is greater than the value of the
RandomAccessCongestThd (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter. When the number of
acknowledged random accesses is less than or equal to the value of the
RandomAccessClearThd (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter, using the optimized setting
increases the delay during random access.
For details about the impact of the constant for calculating the initial transmit power, ramping
step for random access preambles, and maximum number of preamble retransmissions on the
random access procedure, see Power Control Feature Parameter Description.
For details about how to determine whether a cell is congested, see Load Control Feature
Parameter Description.

Adaptive RACH Feature Parameter Description 6 Engineering Guidelines

6 Engineering Guidelines

6.1 When to Use Adaptive RACH

This feature is recommended for a cell where the RTWP is high due to a large number of
random accesses.

This feature takes effect after activation if the cell meets the following conditions:

l The uplink power load is greater than the value of the OptiStartLoadState (BSC6900,
BSC6910) parameter. This parameter is set to 50% by default.
l The average number of acknowledged random accesses (indicated by the
VS.Random.Access.ACKNum.Mean (BSC6900, BSC6910) counter) is greater than
the value of the RandomAccessCongestThd (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter (the
default value is 50).

The feature benefits are affected by the cell uplink power load and the number of
acknowledged random accesses in a cell. The higher the cell uplink power load and the more
the number of acknowledged random accesses in a cell, the greater the feature benefits.

This feature is not applicable to wide coverage scenarios where this feature possibly increases
the call drop rate.

NOTE

A wide coverage scenario meets the following condition: (VS.EcNo.Mean.TP0 (BSC6900, BSC6910)
+ VS.EcNo.Mean.TP1 (BSC6900, BSC6910) + VS.EcNo.Mean.TP2 (BSC6900, BSC6910) +
VS.EcNo.Mean.TP3 (BSC6900, BSC6910))/(VS.EcNo.Mean.TP0 (BSC6900, BSC6910) +
VS.EcNo.Mean.TP1 (BSC6900, BSC6910) + VS.EcNo.Mean.TP2 (BSC6900, BSC6910) +
VS.EcNo.Mean.TP3 (BSC6900, BSC6910) + VS.EcNo.Mean.TP4 (BSC6900, BSC6910) +
VS.EcNo.Mean.TP5 (BSC6900, BSC6910) + VS.EcNo.Mean.TP6.9 (BSC6900, BSC6910) +
VS.EcNo.Mean.TP10.15 (BSC6900, BSC6910) + VS.EcNo.Mean.TP16.25 (BSC6900, BSC6910) +
VS.EcNo.Mean.TP26.35 (BSC6900, BSC6910) + VS.EcNo.Mean.TP36.55 (BSC6900, BSC6910) +
VS.EcNo.Mean.TP.More55 (BSC6900, BSC6910)) x 100% < 80%

6.2 Required Information

The information to be collected before feature activation is as follows:

l VS.MeanRTWP (BSC6900, BSC6910) (average RTWP of a cell) and

VS.BackGroundNoise.Mean (BSC6900, BSC6910) (average uplink background noise
in a cell). The two counters are used to calculate the uplink power load of cell.
The uplink power load of a cell can be calculated using the following formula: Uplink
power load = 1 – 10^(–RoT/10)
In this formula, the rise over thermal (RoT) equals to the difference between the RTWP
and the background noise. RoT = VS.MeanRTWP (BSC6900, BSC6910) –
VS.BackGroundNoise.Mean (BSC6900, BSC6910) In this formula, VS.MeanRTWP
(BSC6900, BSC6910) is the received total wideband power (RTWP) values of a cell and
VS.BackGroundNoise.Mean (BSC6900, BSC6910) is the average uplink background
noise in a cell.
NOTE

If the average RTWP is lower than the background noise, the RoT is 0.
l VS.Random.Access.ACKNum.Mean (BSC6900, BSC6910): average number of
acknowledged random accesses in a cell.
The RNC measures the number of acknowledged random accesses in a cell when the
ACK_PRACH_PREAM_MEAS option under the NBMLdcAlgoSwitch parameter in
the ADD UCELLALGOSWITCH command is selected.

The method of feature deactivation using the CME is the same as that of feature activation
using the CME. For detailed operations, see 6.3.3.3 Using the CME.

6.4 Performance Monitoring

To evaluate the performance of this feature, check whether the RTWP of each cell decreases
or the HSUPA throughput of each cell increases after the feature is activated.

The RTWP and HSUPA throughput of a cell changes with the cell load. Therefore, the
changes in RTWP and HSUPA throughput in a short period of time after this feature is
activated do not reflect the performance of this feature. It is recommended that you check the
RTWPs and HSUPA throughput for 3 to 5 days before and after this feature is activated.

The RTWP of each cell can be checked in the following ways:

l Counters VS.MaxRTWP (BSC6900, BSC6910) and VS.MeanRTWP (BSC6900,

BSC6910) on the RNC side
l Counters VS.HSUPA.LoadOutput.0 to VS.HSUPA.LoadOutput.25 on the NodeB side

Observe HSUPA throughput by querying the value of the RNC performance counter
VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput.TotalBytes (BSC6900, BSC6910).

You can use the following function on the U2000 to initiate measurement of counters
associated with this feature in one-click mode: Quickly Setting Performance Measurement by
Feature. For details, see "Quickly Setting Performance Measurement by Feature" in iManager
U2000 MBB Network Management System Product Documentation.

6.5 Parameter Optimization

Setting the RandomAccessCongestThd (BSC6900, BSC6910) and OptiStartLoadState
(BSC6900, BSC6910) parameters to smaller values increases the probability that this feature
takes effect.

6.6 Troubleshooting
For 3900 series macro base stations configured with a WBBPa board, cells carried on this
WBBPa board do not support this feature. If such a cell is enabled with the Adaptive RACH
