Introduction

Some said confidence is a natural trait, while some said it comes with

years of training and experience. In this ebook, we would like to redefine

what confidence is and how we can transform a person’s confidence-

building process through training and guidance.

In this ebook, we will walk through the essential factors that make a

person appear confident. Under each element, you will find different sub-

factors, tips, and exercises which are useful for you to grasp the concepts

and master these killer moves to dominate with confidence.

Each chapter will begin with the primary factor, followed by 3 sub-factors.

Exercises are what you can carry out daily. You are encouraged to have

a weekly review of your progress.

Something Helpful is where you will find some additional tips.

Mastering these moves will empower you to be a much more confident

individual, and the most critical step is to jump in and get started! Commit

to a date when you are ready to kick start your confidence-building

process.

Write the time down at the space below.

I will start on ______________.

Page 4

!
It is important to know where you start. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is

the highest, where is your confidence level at right now? Write down at

the space below, and we will check in again by the end of the eBook.

My current score is ____________/10.

Last but not least, enjoy and have fun during this process!

Let’s get started!

1. How you Behave

Before talking to you, people have already formed a perception of you

based on your behaviour. Maybe you have experienced something like

this: within a few seconds of meeting someone, you have already decided

whether you want to work with this person.

Perhaps you did not know the reason, but you would say it is because of

the chemistry or the vibe that this person gave. However, when we probe

deeper, there are three subtle factors make us decide if we want to

engage with anyone. Similarly, these factors affect how confident we are

to others.

Page 6
! of 38
!
1.1 Facial Expression

Not every one of us is aware of how our facial expressions appear during

interaction with others. However, it still plays a significant role to make or

break our confidence.

Let's have a reality check!

• Do your facial expressions display your interest in the interaction?

Or quite the opposite, they show your disengagement?

• Do your nervousness and lack of confidence show easily on your

face every time you are stressed or under pressure?

Lacking awareness and control over your facial expressions can make

you nervous and unconfident. Hence it is the very first thing you need to

take care of.

Exercise Time!

Becoming interested in people can be learned. You can start by finding

common interests and get engaged in what others are sharing.

Page 7! of !38
Exercise 1.1

Look for and indicate when something is interesting to you or when it is a

common interest. Develop ways to make your interest known. You can

try:

• make a remark that shows your interest,

• offer an agreement for the topic or the speaker,

• provide an agreeing opinion about the subject,

• give a related piece of information.

Write down the 1 ACTION that you are going to take in the coming

week? When will you do it?

The ACTION:

__________________________________________________________________

When: _________________________________

Exercise 1.2

On top of keeping yourself interested and engaged, the second step is to

learn how to keep your face open and curious. If you are interested, but

your face shows otherwise, that doesn't help communicate your interest

effectively.

Let's see how to make sure your face conveys the same message.

Step 1: Run a mock conversation with a friend or in front of a mirror to

look out for the following facial expressions:

1. you are bored

Page ! 8 of !38
2. you are not interested

3. you disagree with the topic/the speaker about the topic

as compared to:

4. you are active and participating

5. you are interested

6. you agree with the topic/the speaker about the topic

Step 2: reduce 1 to 3 and display more of 4 to 6 neutrally or positively

when having a conversation with others. Try to spend 15 min daily to

practice 4 to 6.

By doing these 2 steps daily, being aware of your facial expressions, you

will start to internalise what are the appropriate facial expressions.

Weekly Review

On the 7th day of the week, after practising these exercises, spend some

time to reflect.

Are these exercises helpful for you?

In what ways?

1.2 Body Language

Body language constitutes a significant part of our communication. While

a good command of language adds to your confidence, awareness and

adequate use of appropriate body language enhance your confidence

too.

Let's see where you at in terms of your use of body language.

• Do you know how your body should be held or positioned in an

interaction?

• Do you feel awkward or misplaced in your body?

• Or the opposite, you know what is appropriate in different

situations, and able to cause your body to move appropriately and

appear confident?

• Are you aware of the impact of your body language?

• Are you not sure what is communicated through your body

language most of the time?

The answers to your questions indicate your awareness of your body

language, the impact of it, and what is appropriate in different situations.

Page ! 10 of ! 38
Let's explore what can you do to bring your use of body language to a

higher level!

Exercise Time!

Paying attention to the way you hold your body when you are in social

situations is the first step to build your awareness about your body

language.

Exercise 1.3

Step 1: You can try standing in front of the mirror, and study different

postures in body language that can make you look more confident.

Practice those postures.

Step 2: Studying pictures of people who look confident will give you clues

about how to look confident, and you can start learning from those.

Step 3: Once you are getting the hang of it, you can move on to create

your postures.

Step 4: Build at least 3 different postures that display confidence for you.

Build interactive body movements and poses like shaking hands,

greetings and goodbyes which come across as confident.

Step 5: Practice makes perfect but remembers to collect feedbacks to

adjust from time to time.

Weekly Review

On the 7th day of the week, after practising these exercises, spend some

time to reflect.

1.3 Social Skills

Social skills, just like any other sills, can be trained and acquired. It is not

as mysterious as it appears to be, but it is difficult for some people to

master.

Truth is, we were taught writing skills, maths skills, thinking skills and

many other skills in school. When it comes to social skills, we were

expected to get the hang of it from our interactions with people around

us, and eventually, master these skills on our own.

But the question is: are these interactions adequate to educate and train

us in these social skills? Maybe not.

Page 13
! of 38
!
• Do you feel your social skills are weak, sometimes immature and

inappropriate?

• Do you tend to be passive and uninteresting?

• Are you just uninterested in getting along with people in general?

• Sometimes are you unsure about what to say, how to say it, and

when to say it?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you are in the right

place. Read on for the tips.

Something helpful!

Some expert’s help in dealing with the fears and resistance to social

interaction will be useful. Unpleasant experiences from the past could still

be holding you back from social interactions.

You could make use of some treatment or therapy to help overcome any

anxieties or fears that you may have in socialising. You can find the

strength in you to overcome any barriers you may have.

Once you are ready, find a program to learn how to increase your social

skills and social mingling ability. Getting a coach to work with you to

develop your strengths will help tremendously as well.

It’s great if you are pleased with your social ability, and you are always

successfully meeting and interacting with people. If sometimes you feel

Page ! 14 of !38
that your social success is based on random luck, you are unsure about

what works, read on, and find out how to get better with the following

exercises.

Exercise time!

Exercise 1.4

A genuine curiosity about your interests and the world around you could

help improve your social skills. Start by paying attention to mastering your

social interaction skills.  Answer the following questions can help you get

started.

2. How you appear

Like it or not, appearance matters a lot in society. We are always judged

by our presence, which includes our style, clothes, and even feature.

Those who take good care of their appearance tend to get more positive

feedbacks. These positive feedbacks then promote a higher confidence

level and better self-esteem.

In this chapter, you will find out more about how to improve your

appearance by working on these 3 sub-factors.

Page 17
! of 38
!
2.1 Personal Style

We all have our style, what we call ‘natural’. Our beliefs and habits about

grooming affect how we look. Your style compliments you, have no effect

or makes you look worse than you actually are.

Grooming and taking care of yourself is not just about making you look

pretty, regardless of what being pretty means for you. When you invest

more time and effort in taking care of yourself and your appearance, it

changes your look and your relationship with yourself and your presence.

• Do you believe in your unique style and practically go natural

without any personal grooming?

• Do you care more about being comfortable for yourself instead of

social requirements?

Page ! 18 of ! 38
• Do you tend to avoid places that require some kind of dress code?

• Do you tend to put on whatever you happen to have and do not

spend much time or money on clothes that compliment you?

To improve your style, you can start by understanding how others

perceive you.

Something helpful!

Step 1: Working on taking care of your appearance and trying to make

others feel comfortable when interacting with you. This will start to

transform others’ perception of you.

Step 2: Have a reality check and find out what people think of you in

general. Use their comments as feedback and continue to improve on

your style.

On the other hand, do you feel that you already have a good sense of

grooming and taking care of yourself? You have done an adequate job to

look good and pleasant. You know how to pick up certain clothes that

compliment you, but you feel that your wardrobe still consists of a few

functional pieces and many mediocre pieces?

Page ! 19 of !38
Exercise Time!

Exercise 2.1

You can start taking care of yourself daily. Set some time aside, like 30

minutes every day, or several times a week, to create a routine of taking

care of your appearance. It could be taking care of your skin, hair or body,

anything that makes you appear better to others. Write down a start date

for this exercise, and what do you want to do to make yourself look

better?

Start Date: _______________

Action: _____________________________________

Start to develop aspects or features that are socially desirable to yourself

and others. Try working out, improving your body or your appearance, or

certain parts of your outward appearance. Developing such aspects will

make you feel proud of yourself. Similarly, write down the action and

when do you plan to do it.

2.2 Fashion Sense

While a sense of fashion could be natural for some, it may not be a

common sense for everyone.

Do you have what is commonly known as a sense of fashion? Or you

didn’t see the point or bother to figure it out? A convenient way to dress

may not always be the most appropriate way. Taking some time to figure

out more about clothes and style can help you appear more confident

too.

Exercise Time!

Exercise 2.2

An investment in clothes, both in terms of good taste as well as good

quality, is needed.

Page 22
! of 38
!
• Pay attention to what looks good and what is just passable.

• Pay attention to your dress sense and how you put your outfits

together.

• Talk to a fashion consultant or a personal dressing expert to learn

how can you improve your dress sense.

• Start to learn about what messages you are sending with your

dressing and style.

• Discover what styles of outfits exist. Go through different fashion

or dress magazine to learn more about it, but do not limit yourself

to those. Collect different ideas on what styles are available and

what may look good on you.

• Pay attention to what makes you look your best in most social

situations.

Do you usually look good, but not the fantastic type? There is still room

for improvement, read on to find more!

Exercise 2.3

There are a few steps to follow in terms of fashion sense.

Step 1: Start to develop your style in conjunction with the best fashion

trends. This helps to maintain your individuality and uniqueness.

Page 23
! of 38
!
Step 2: You can also start paying attention to what constitutes the quality

of the clothes you have, such as fabric, cut and style. This will help you

understand fashion better.

Step 3: Find out what makes you look the best: what are the essential

elements? What are the details that work and what didn’t work?

Step 4: Start to adjust and improve your unique style while keeping up

with the best of the current fashion trends.

2.3 Your Feature

We are all unique in our ways. Some features may be perceived as more

socially desirable from time to time.

While others and social preferences may change from time to time, your

perception towards your features makes a huge difference in how you

wear it off. It may determine whether you will make time and effort to

make use of other externals elements such as grooming, clothes, and

styles to complement your features. On the opposite, it can also sabotage

your appearance unconsciously.

Do you have a poor self-image? Do you think that you don’t have

anything good about your features and appearance? Secretly, do you

think that you are very dull or even ugly? Did you grow up surrounded by

people who criticised your appearance and features?

What can you do instead?

Page 25
! of !38
Exercise Time!

Exercise 2.4

First thing first, you need to neutralise your negative opinions and build up

positive ideas.

Try out the following:

• Start building your positive self-image and stop all negative self-

criticisms on your appearance.

• Reduce contact with people who judge you negatively about your

appearance.

• Ask those who care about you to speak neutrally or positively

about your appearance or features.

• Seek out an expert in make-up or grooming will help greatly. They

know how to make your features stand out well for you.

From there, start adjusting and working on your grooming, clothes, and

styles that compliment you and make your features appear better.

The key is learning to relate well with the best of your features.

Do you belong to the other group? Do you think that your features are

okay but there is nothing really outstanding? Do you consider yourself to

be average and feel that maybe some parts of you can be improved, but

you didn’t make any changes and just let it stay the same?

Page 26
! of 38
!
Exercise 2.5

Begin to identify what is best about your features. Is it your eyes, your

body shape, your hair, your legs, your skin tone? Once you can discover

those, you can start to find clothes, start grooming or other ways to make

your best parts look even better and stunning.

What will you do next? When will you take action?

3. How you talk

How you talk makes a significant difference in the impression that your

audience has towards you. If you want to appear confident, apart from

working on your appearance and your behaviours, your way of talking is

another factor to improve on.

Page 28
! of 38
!
3.1 The Confident way of Talking

When it comes to speaking, do you have a pleasant voice? Or on the

opposite your voice is untrained and unpleasant, and doesn’t help you

win any likes?

Vocal quality and control are needed for a pleasant voice. Have you

started training or developing the quality of your voice? If not, it’s

probably due to a lack of exposure or interest.

Do people talk to you because they need to, or they like to?  You may be

aware that communication happens with most people out of necessity or

utility most of the time. More time and effort are needed in developing

your voice.

Page 29

Exercise Time!

Exercise 3.1

Even though we are born with the ability to speak, not all of us are

masters in talking. It needs training and practices. From there, you will be

able to find out your style and also the most comfortable way for you to

speak confidently.

• Join a speaking movement such as Toastmasters Club. You can

start working with a vocal coach to find out more about your

current voice conditions and how to improve.

• Singing classes can help to improve the quality of your voice too.

• Participate and learn to enjoy activities that use your voice.

If you feel that your voice is okay, average, not that fantastic but not that

bad as well, perhaps we can find out how to make it better!

Maybe you felt this wasn’t your priority, and you chose to focus on other

areas instead? If so, what do you want to do differently?

__________________________________________________________________

Or do you take your stride with your voice as it is? And you may not think

that you could upgrade your voice?

Here is something for you to consider.

Page 30

Exercise 3.2

No matter what the reasons were, we can start to train your voice from

now on. Here are the practices for you to follow through.

Step 1: You got to be willing to invest further in your vocal quality. Are you

ready to do so?

Yes / No

Step2: Find a vocal coach who could bring out the best out of your voice.

Step3: Pay attention to different aspects of your vocal mechanism and

learn to use them to your advantage. Increase the activities in which you

could make use of your voice, and improve over time, such as public

speeches or presentations.

Step4: Learn how you can use your voice to talk to affect or inspire others

positively. You can start by sharing things that inspire you directly.

3.2 Manner of Speaking

You may start realising the different aspects of communication and how

they lead to confidence or the lack of confidence. Next up, we are going

to focus on the manner of speaking.

Are you often careless or even clumsy with your way of speaking? In the

sense that you could be quite blunt and do not consider much of other

people’s feelings and sensitivities when you talk about certain things. Do

you prefer being direct without seeing the point of moderating or

beautifying your language to make it more palatable?

Let’s talk more about the art of conversation!

Exercise Time!

Exercise 3.3

Page 32
! of 38
!
• We can start by eliminating negative mannerisms in your speaking,

such as unnecessary conversational aspects, including stuttering,

awkward pauses, pause fillers, clichés, or any overused

expressions.

• You can learn to consider other people’s feelings and situations

when you have a conversation with them. Spare them the

bluntness and hurt from the negative talking, and instead, look for

ways to say something better to suit your audience.

• Learn what to say to make people more receptive and responsive

to you. Being polite generally helps.

While your mannerism in speaking may not be splendid, you feel that it is

okay and moderately placed compared to others. Perhaps for you,

complimenting others isn’t much an issue, but you tend not to take many

initiatives when someone requires a different manner of speaking.

How can you become more confident?

Exercise 3.4

Develop a genuine interest in others. Become genuinely happy for others.

Be the one that gives off positive vibes and uplifts the mood of a social

setting.

You can look forward to speaking in such a way that brings out the best in

people.

Page 33
! of !38
• Learn to speak well of others in an appropriate way. People tend

to enjoy compliments when they are sincere.

• Learn to make people feel good when they talk to you. Encourage

them, acknowledge them in different ways.

Write down below, what will be some of the compliments/encouragement

words/phrases that you can use?

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

Exercise 3.5

You can start to be more willing to lead or initiate a conversation,

especially when the other person is less skilful in handling the

conversation. This makes it easier for them to follow your pace and enjoy

the conversation with you.

Think of a couple of topics you are keen on. Start to think of a way to

initiate the conversation based on these topics. Try to avoid sensitive

topics such as politics, religion, family background of others.

Write down below, what will be some of topics that you can use?

3.3 Use of Language

In our last part, we will discuss the importance of the use of language.

Languages are your tools in communicating with others. The

effectiveness of your tools and your way of using them determine the

quality of your communication directly.

Are you well versed with your choice of words? Are you often struggling

to find the right things to say? Did some words you used even hurt or

embarrass people?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, your training in the use

of language might not be enough, and there is room for improvement.

Something helpful!

Your first step is to expose yourself to good choices of languages.

Building up knowledge in those areas could be essential. As you are

learning new things, you will discover how much more you can expand

your expression. Explore more sources of functional language you could

use.

• You can start developing language that expresses different

feelings and sensations so you can express yourself with a richer

vocabulary.

• Get a notebook and start creating your collection of memorable

sayings or quotes that you find fascinating and helpful in

expressing your thoughts and feelings better.

• Practice makes perfect. Have a conversation or train with

proficient speakers and learn how to speak better.

the ends but not always continue the conversation? Find out more about

what can you do to further improve your use of language.
