Miller left high and dry
In a race that was more farce than tragedy, the sad
sight of a lone Jack Miller sitting on his Ducati as
the rest of the field scrambled back to their pits was
something to behold. After a storming qualifying,
Miller stuck to his guns and opted for slicks while
everyone else went with wets. After a sighting lap
the riders panicked and changed rubber, while
the officials panicked and changed the rules.
Miller fumed in vain for over 15 minutes as
the organisation got their act together,
ultimately awarding him a 50m head
start of one of the maddest GP
races in recent history. See p74.

COUNTER-
ROTATING
CRANKS
In a conventional motorcycle
engine, the crankshaft (which
converts the linear motion of
the pistons into a rotational
motion) moves in the same
direction as the wheels.
Motorcycles have used
this configuration since the
beginning because it’s simple,
lightweight and efficient. But
all those objects rotating in the
same direction have a large
inertial mass, which can make
it difficult to turn and give a
bike the tendency to wheelie
under extreme acceleration.

to the wheels. This means
the gyroscopic forces of the
crank and wheels cancel
each other out to a certain
extent, negating the typical
turning and wheelie effects.
The counter-rotating crank
first hit the big time in 1980s,
when it featured in Honda’s
NSR500 but it’s back under
the spotlight after Ducati used

Only time will tell.
We say If you’ve never been to
a BSB meet, Brands Indy is a
blast. The short circuit length
means the riders are back
round in less than a minute and
because of the hilly nature you
can see most of the circuit from
the top of Hailwood’s Hill.

Repsol Honda boss Alberto
MARC MARQUEZ
Puig was quick to hit out at Race
Direction after Sunday’s race for
handing Marquez a ride-through
penalty and instead blamed the
confusion on the grid.
Puig says Marquez received
mixed signals from marshals on
the grid after stalling his bike and
attempting to restart it and was
only doing what he thought was
the right thing to do.
“It’s not completely clear what
happened on the grid. Something
that doesn’t normally happen
did, and from there it was a
continuation of things that made
everything more complicated.
The rider acted on what he
thought but you can imagine when
you’re in that situation with 20
riders behind you, you want to be
in a safe position. He thought that
the marshals were telling him to
do that and no one tried to take
him out of that position.”
Despite calls from his Yamaha
counterpart Lin Jarvis (see p75)
for further penalties for Marquez,
Puig is hopeful that cooler heads
will prevail once things calm
down ahead of the next round in
Austin in two weeks’ time.
“Valentino has a lot of
experience and he knows these
things can happen in a race
when conditions are difficult.
We’re really sorry about what
happened, but we don’t think our
rider was out of control. Of course
I understand that Valentino and
Yamaha are not happy about the
situation and they have a right to
be. But it has happened to all of us
in racing many times.”

Valentino Rossi launched a no-holds-

Marquez after being taken out by
the Spaniard on lap 20 of Sunday’s
Argentinian Grand Prix.
It was yet another escalation in a
bitter feud between the pair stretching
back to their infamous 2015 collision
at Sepang. Back them it was Rossi that
came out ahead, but this time a move
from Marquez pushed Rossi wide, onto
the grass causing the Italian to crash
out of sixth position.
The furious nine-time world cham-
pion launched an incredible attack on
Marquez after Sunday’s race, citing
previous incidents both during Sun-

that he says makes the Spaniard unsafe
to race against.
