2. Research Question and Objectives

2.1. Research Question

Is there a difference in the number and kind of bacterial colonies found on door
handles between lecture rooms and rest rooms of DLSHSI medicine building first
semester, SY 2011-2012?

2.2. Research Objectives

2.2.1. General Objective

To identify and compare the number and kind of bacteria found on door
handles between lecture rooms and rest rooms of DLS-HSI Medicine building
first semester, SY 2011-2012.

2.2.2. Specific Objectives

To determine the number of and identify the bacteria found on door handles
of restrooms of DLSHSI medicine, First semester, SY 2011-2012.

To compare the number of bacteria found on door handles between lecture

rooms and rest rooms DLSHSI medicine, First semester, SY 2011-2012

To differentiate the bacterial colonies present on door handles of lecture room

and comfort rooms of DLS-HSI medicine First semester, SY 2011-2012

Students 4.1. Study Population E(-), D(-): Lecture rooms door handles with
insignificant bacterial growth
The target population of our study is the door handles found in DLSHSI
Medicine Building accessible to 2 nd and 3rd medical students. There’s a total
of 105 door handles and this includes rest rooms and other rooms such as
lecture rooms, skills laboratory rooms, faculty rooms, meeting rooms and
storage rooms.

4.2. Sample population

There are a total of 10 rest rooms found in DLSHSI Medicine building which is
the study of interest and will be considered as the cases in this study. Other
accessible rooms will be considered as the control and hence, 10 of these will
also be sampled.

4.3. Sampling Frame

All 10 restrooms found in DLSHSI will be used as cases in this study.

Controls will be chosen according to each floors door handles proportion to
the total number of the door handles of the other rooms found in the Medicine
Building DLSHSI. There is 15 door handles of other rooms in 4 th floor, 27 in 3rd
floor, 19 in 2nd floor, and 34 in 1st floor. Hence, 2 controls will be from the 4 th
floor, 3 from the 3rd floor, 2 from the 2nd floor, and 3 from the 1st floor.

4.4. Sampling Unit

The sampling unit is door handle accessible to 2 nd and 3rd year medical
students in DLSHSI Medicine Building.

4.5. Elementary Unit

The elementary unit is the same as our sampling unit.

5. Selection of :

5.1. Subjects
Stratified random sampling would be utilized in the study. Ten out of 105 door
handles are restrooms door handles which are considered the exposed in our
going study. All these rest rooms door handles will be included and
considered as cases. The other 95 door handles will be the pool where the
controls will be obtained and this will be selected by applying stratified
random sampling method. There will be a total of 10 controls randomly picked
through this method.

5.2. Cases

There are 2 rest rooms in 4 th floor, 4 rest rooms in 3 rd floor, 2 rest rooms in 2 nd
floor and 2 rest rooms in the 1st floor, and giving a total of 10 rest room door
handles accessible to 2nd and 3rd year medical student in DLSHSI Medicine
building. Since randomly choosing would mean lowering the number of cases,
all of it will be included in this study.

5.3. Controls

The number of controls must be equal to the number of cases. Since there
are 10 restrooms in Medicine Building DLSHSI, 10 controls will also be used.
We grouped the door handles according to their location -1st floor, 2nd floor,
3rd floor and 4th floor. The number of door handles to be sampled in each
floor will be based on their proportion to the total number of door handles of
other rooms found in Medicine building, DLSHSI. There are a total of 95 door
handles and since 16% of these are from the 4th floor, 16% of the 10 controls
will be from this floor- 2 door handles. 3rd floor is 28%, 2nd floor is 20%, and
1st floor is 36%, therefore, the number of rooms to be collected in each floor
will be 3 door handles, 2 door handles, and 3 door handles, respectively.

The researchers decided to acquire 400 respondents based on +/- 5% with 95 %

confidence interval. The sample size for the study was statistically determined based on
the population of the NCR male high school students. Statistically, the sample size
needed is only 384, but in order to give reservations for possible spoiled instruments the
researchers settled to have 400 respondents as sample size. In order to come out to this
number of accomplished survey questionnaires, five probability sampling stages were
employed. These were:
