1.a) List out the major assumptions made for the classical model of generator, draw the
equivalent circuit and explain about the modifications to be made in case of transient

b) Derive the q- axis equivalent circuit of the synchronous machine. [5]
c) Draw the general functional block diagram of an excitation system and briefly explain
about Excitation system stabilizer (ESS) and Power system stabilizer (PSS). [5]
d) Explain the concept of synchronizing torque and damping torque as applied to SMIB
system. [5]
e) State the objective of designing of Power System Stabilizer (PSS) and explain the
criterion for the choice of control signals. [5]

2. Derive the criterion for steady state stability of classical model and give your remarks
based on eigen value analysis when mechanical power ‘Pm’ is varied. [10]
