Education in Times
of Pandemic
The entire world has declared a global war
against the killer virus known as the COVID-19.
On March 2020, the existence of this virus created
vast changes that have caused series of
transformations in social, labor, political, and
economic life. It brought indisputable havoc to the
global economic, which has resulted to the loss of
jobs of many people around the globe.
One of the major problems that Filipinos
have encountered during the pandemic is the
suspension of classes as per advised by the
Department of Education (Deped). The main reason
for this, is to ensure the safety of the students and way to make students learn even with the absence
the teachers. The DepEd gave high consideration to
the consequences and risks that may occur due to
the occurrence of the pandemic, and yet may not
deprived the rights of the students to learn
continuously. The shift from face-to-face learning
to the different alternative teaching-learning
modalities has served as a realization for learning
continuity amidst the pandemic. The adaptation of
the various modalities presented by the Department
of Education was implemented to cope up with the

crucial problems during this challenging time.
Furthermore, modular teaching has been
injected among schools in several parts of the
country. Printed Self-Learning Modules (SLMs)
that are based on the given Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELCs) are distributed in every
school. This modular approach seem to be the best
of face-to-face classes. It is a friendly and most
effective way for learning to take place even in
areas where internet connectivity is not possible.
Through the collaborative effort of DepEd, LGUs,
community and parents, the success on this
endeavor will definitely be a better one. The use of
video lessons is also highly recommended
especially in subjects where skills and practicum
results are needed for the computation of the grades
of the students. Education in the times of pandemic
is definitely a tough one, but the huge effort given
by the teachers is an assurance that we can win on
this war.
