1.

To the left is a graph showing

the decomposition of 0.6 mol
dm-3 hydrogen peroxide
2. forming oxygen gas at room
temperature. Make TWO
sketches on the graph to the
left labelled A and B , to show
the shape of the curve when
the following reactions are
carried out
a) at 10 °C above room
temperature
b)using a lower
concentration of hydrogen
peroxide

7. The catalyst manganese(IV) oxide can be used to alter the rate
of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

Jonathan carried out an experiment at room temperature and

pressure (rtp) to determine the rate of decomposition of hydrogen
peroxide using manganese(IV) oxide as the catalyst. He did this
by measuring the volume of oxygen given off at different time
intervals. Water is also produced during the decomposition and
the reaction is exothermic (this means that the reaction releases
energy and the temperature rises)

Table 1 records Jonathan’s results using manganese(IV) oxide and

100 cm3 of 0.8 mol dm-3 hydrogen peroxide.

Karen carried out a similar experiment to Jonathan using 100 cm3

of 0.4 mol dm-3 hydrogen peroxide solution. Figure 1 shows a
graph of the data obtained by Karen.

Using the same axes as the graph above, plot a graph of the volume of oxygen
against times using the data in Table 1. The first three points have been plotted
for you on the graph. [3 marks]

Compare the graphs for Jonathan’s and Karen’s results. Comment on both the
slopes of the graphs and the amounts of oxygen produced. Account for the
differences between the two sets of results.
