MY MOTHER AT SIXTY-SIX

SUMMARY
Though ageing is a natural process, yet the fear of separation from your loved ones
is very painful. The poem ‘My mother at 66’ by Kamala Das explores the feelings
of melancholy and pain that a daughter experiences while leaving her mother. The
agony of this separation is brought forward in this poem very explicitly.
The poet, on her way to the airport noticed her mother sleeping beside her, open
mouthed and her face as pale as that of a corpse. She is gripped with the fear and
grief and realized that her “mother was as old as she looked”.
The poet tried to drive her negative thoughts by looking outside. The scene outside
the window is of growing life and energy. The rapidly sprinting trees along the side
of the road, the merrily playing children symbolizes youth and vitality. The airport
is also brimming with activity. After the security, check the poet once again looks
back at her mother. She noticed her ashen and pale face that looked like winter’s
moon. The poet felt the dull pain gnawing within her.
The poet remembered how often as a child, like any other child, she too feared
losing her mother. She was filled with sorrow and insecurity as she bids goodbye
to her mother and tried to hide her fears by smiling. As an adult, the poet tried to
put on a brave front by hiding her fear behind a smile. Possibly, she was also trying
to convince herself that her fears were unfounded. As she bids goodbye to her
mother at the airport, the image of the old worn out mother in the twilight of years
strikes her again but keeping a brave front she says “see you soon Amma”.
