back to life and bringing money back into the Sailorotown of being able to portray the growth of Belfast, as a meth-

within the regeneration schemes of the area.
IMPORTANCE OF SAILORTOWN REGENERATION

‘ it’s a sad day when financial considerations dic-

tate whether a parish lives or dies.’

SAILORTOWN, is one of Belfast’s first waterfront village which is located be-

tween the Belfast Docks Area and York Street. With the building of the M2 in the
1960s, the community was dispersed around Belfast. St Josephs Church which
is located within Princes Dock Street in Sailortown, in 2000 the Church was
set to close in 2000, the locals formed a historical committee and in 2006 the
Church gave their keys over to them.

The 2 high rise buildings which have been built beside the Church had caused
much damage as well as natural decay to the building, leaving it in unsuitable
conditions. Now, Sailortown Regeneration are ‘working to carry out essential
repairs, employ experts to advise on use and conservation and design a space
where future generations can work, live and play.’

KEY ISSUES:

- Lack of investment within the Sailortown

Area; the Church was left untouched for
years and with the new development to
either side, it has suffered severe decay and
whethering.

- Lack of Connectivity between Sailortown

Area and new areas of development in Bel-
fast ; Titanic Quarter, UU Development.

- Lack of knowledge within the broader Bel-

fast community regarding this area; the ma-
jority of people will be unaware of the slow
decline of this area.

FUTURE

STRATEGIES TO TACKLE ISSUES

- St Joseph’s Parochial House; creating an installa-

tion piece within the Church with areas of flexible
space to open up and extend the community. I want
to create a space that will bring tourists and locals
to use the space; to view, work, explore.

- Connectivity; within our studio we have numer-

ous projects based around the area in a scheme to
connect the area from numerous areas ; the map
below (created by Aidan Foster Y5), displays all the
projects together along with his proposed elevat-
ed walkway connecting from Princes Dock Street
through to Coroporation Street.

- Through more awareness and investment being put

into the area and the connectivity, the areas devel-
opment will be boosted; creating new opportunities
for retail, office etc, creating more employment for
the broader area of Belfast also.

VATICAN CHAPEL
CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALITY

CARLA JUABACA STUDIO created this chapel which creates a harmonious integration between the
water and the trees that all surround Venice; the reflections of the landscape are created by the
steel beams which are made of highly polished stainless steel.

It consists of 4 steel beams; one represents the Cross and the other is a Bench, two of which old
elements of the Catholic Church. They are built on 7 pieces of concrete, which were laid into the
ground.

This project works as an Etheral project; speaks metaphorically of the passage of life, existence and
the non - existence.

( Below; SketchUp Model I created of the Chapel and Construction Details)

SEAN GODSELL

VATICAN CHAPEL
CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALITY

SEAN GODSELL tower is created from a steel framed tower which is bolted into pile caps locked into
wooden piles. The vertical view of the tower resembles a cross, as the 4 sides at the bottom open to
form an ‘altar’. This takes inspiration from the Bell Towers of Venice in St Marks Square; the altar is
positioned directly beneath on a platform elevated above the ground.

To the right are graphics from a model I created to get the sense of the materiality from the steel
structure; The interior through the tower has a golden aluminium cladding, creating again a precious
moment through the chapel as you look to the sky.
STRUCTURAL CONCEPT MODEL

‘god is in the details’

“You employ stone, wood and concrete and with these materials you build houses and
palaces; that is construction . Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart,
you do me good, I am happy and I say: ‘This is beautiful’ That is Architecture. Art enters
in.”

Le Corbusier
‘I work a little bit like a sculptor. When I start, my first idea for a building is with the
material. I believe architecture is about that. It's not about paper, it's not about
forms. It's about space and material.’

Peter Zumthor
MATERIALITY COMPARISON
C A S E S T U D Y & S T J O S E P H ‘S C H U R C H
The 4 sides around the Altar in the Sean Godsell Tower all open up through hydraulic
struts to reveal the altar. The Aluminium used throughout creates this reflective ele-
ment to the design, with the trees surrounding it almost makes it feel like it blends
into the natural environment which surrounds it.

St Josephs Church has now had 2 high rise apartment blocks built directly beside
it, enclosing the space and making it feel almost claustrophobic not embracing its
natural space.
LIGHT&REFLECTIONS
With the new highrise apartment blocks built at each side of
the Church, this led to damages and the Church not being
maintained or repaired for years. With the materials It is clear
the building has been subject to damage through no repairs,
and one of the most common cause of brick damage is water
that is trapped in porous, then this freezes and expanding
causing the surfaces to disintegrate.
SPACE ORDERING EXERCISE
SPACE CONCEPT2

Arranging planar elements -

overlapping planes.

The ‘planes’ are the objects to be

arranged. Space is perceived as ‘partially’
bounded, often ‘overlapping’, defined by
the relationship of planes. You should
experiment with varying sizes and
arrangements.
- What is form ?
- What is space ?
- What is the relationship between space and form ?
- Do we get a final form by designing a space first ?
- Do we get a space by designing a final form first ?
‘Nonetheless, Van Doesburg’s influence on the Bauhaus is undeniable.
Herbert Bayer’s architectural designs clearly show the influence of De Stijil
in their colourful planes.’ pg12
