Informatics in Nursing Leadership: Leading in the Age of Technology

The journal “Informatics in Nursing Leadership: Leading in the Age of Technology” by

Andrea Knox, RN, BSN, CON talks about how informatics help nurses to be good leaders on the

medical field using technology in the modern era. It also shows how they came up with this

journal through research using four different themes which are the “Nursing Leadership’s Role

in Healthcare Informatics, Nursing Leadership in Healthcare Informatics Drives Interoperability,

Nursing Leaders Need Big Data, and Nursing Leadership Informatics Competency

Development”. Nursing leaders need to develop informatics competencies to drive professional

interoperability, ensure nursing data is leveraged to inform decision making, and provide

patients with efficient, safe and innovative care.

As nurses, we collect information about our clients, use this data to develop nursing care

plans, implement the plan, and communicate our findings with other health care providers. For

example, in hospitals and clinic offices, health care providers have access to electronic health

records, which provide access to private and confidential client health information in a secured

environment. Services such as telehealth provide a means for client education, as well as

medical and health care services such as health monitoring or clinical diagnosis. Social media is

also being used in health care to provide a means for clients to share experiences with one

another or learn more about their medical condition. Now more than ever, nurses have the

opportunity to communicate and plan care more effectively, in collaboration with clients and

other health care providers, due to advances in technology. This journal also talks about that, it

is essential for all nurses to develop informatics competencies in order to function within the

complexity of the health care environment there is a notable absence of verbiage specific to the

development of informatics skills in nurse leaders.
